I have stashed a fine bottle of Appleton's Rum to toast all our fellow Rally competitors, Capt Zlogg of course will want to sip his fine Russian Plonk but that will be fine as well. Sincerely looking forward to flying with all. Have performed several trails to get my timing right where I want it. I am currently tenting it at Darwin Int'l. Made it to OZ this year with plently of time to spare.

Hello Peter, well met, though surely the problem of deciding which 20 bottles of Islay Single Malt to take is even more difficult than deciding which aircraft to fly on the GAAR? Laphroaig comes as 10-y-o, Quarter cask, 10-y-o cask strength, 15-y-o, and the legendary, fantastically expensive, double-matured, and definitely-not-available-in-shops 30-y-o Cairdeas. Then there's the Bowmore, Lagavulin, Ardbeg, Bunahabhain, and Bruichladdich distilleries to consider (Bruichladdich does about 40 different vintages including "WMD"). An additional complication rears its head for the 2010 GAAR, as the new Kilchoman distillery will have released its first 3-y-o by then.
For myself, it's the Laphroaig-15, a few bottles of Pussers, Pimms (natch), and the Gordons has already been improved by the addition of 3lbs of damsons and 3lbs of sugar to every quart - the result is too sticky for an avgas substitute but otherwise excellent. Fortnums can, of course, supply most of the foostuffs, but I'll bring my own game pies.
I note with relief that the rally organisers are still keeping the route clear of the areas contaminated a few years ago when pilots of a certain VA (no names, no packdrill) let their cheese sandwiches escape....

Hello John, Well here we both are again pre GAAR, I hope you are well. This year it is the Goose for me, an ex RAF Air Sea Rescue number with the engines replaced back from the newer Lycoming Piston to the Pratt and Whitney R 985 Wasp Jr nine cylinder air cooled radials. Have you decided yet which ‘Bus’ you might take?
Hawkins will accompany me this year and so will be able to supply me when required with drinks and food, silver service of course, and carry out much of the routine admin, starching the shirts, cleaning the silver, ironing the Times, that sort of thing, allowing me to concentrate on the flying.
I am glad to read you are intending again to bring your own infamous [and very tasty] Game Pie’s.
I see no mention yet, though it is early days, of a GAAR Song, will there be one or is a previous version to be sung again.
As for Islay, then it has to be the ‘Peaty, Brackish, Smokey’ Bowmore for me.
Ah yes Cheese Sandwiches………………the nightmares still persist.

I am must say that due to the state of the Michigan economy and the fact I have entered three aircraft for the first time( with out takeing into consideration riseing fuel and maintance cost)my cargo load will be not what I had planned,a few cases of Kentucky burbon(supplied courticy of Bluegrass Airlines who have seen how I fly and figured I may be better with It), Pabts blue ribbon beer, Spam ,wonder white bread, pork rinds, and last but not least Hershyes chocholate bars . Oh I almost forgot a couble of cases of Charmin extra soft toilet tissue!

Well, the old Valetta made it to Darwin this afternoon. 9196 n.m. from Lyneham UK, taking 40.3 hours, averaging 228kts. Time now to get acclimatised with some serious bundoo-bashing.

We hope to be joining GAAR 2009 with a few Cessna's from South Africa.... zsflyers.co.za Confirm this is also a FS9 event? ZSFlyer, FS9 and FSX are both officially supported for the GAAR 2009. In case you haven't seen it yet, more details can be found on the GAAR 2009 web site. There is a link on the Bluegrass Airlines home page.

OK Having read all the great comments and good stories about these GAAR outings, I am going to take the challenge. I have never done one of these things but if all you young whipper-snappers will put up with this old geezer I will just jump in. I shall enter with my old VP 44-P-4 PBY-5A. I have flown the test course 5 times and have times all within 20 – 30 sec of each other and the average time on the marks is 23.02 min. Cruise speed of 131 kias at the required altitude of 4500 ft. Now I let the autopilot hold the headings and maintain the altitude for me. I s that legal or is hands-on the whole trip required ? Can I qualify??? BudsBud BGAN063

Jump right in and let that PBY fly, be good to have a couple around for the over water sections. If you see a Yellow raft and a fellow fighting off sharks with spam cans stop by and give me a lift!!

I guess it behoves me to follow on behind and pick up the remnants of discarded airframes and remains. As it is, I will probably have to smooth over any indiscretions by rowdy GAAR participants and conduct triage on the relationship with the locals, particularly if it involves the cheese sandwiches.
As for anyone who plans on being shark or crocodile bait, lucky I chose the Grumman HU-16 'Albatross' with a SAR configuration.
BudsBud,
Welcome, and I'm glad you are joining us for the GAAR 2009. As for autopilot, they had to invent for some reason.
To Everyone,
With the New Year now only a bit over 5 hrs away here in Sydney, Australia, can I wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year. As for me, I won't be celebrating too much, it seems I made some promises about certain deadlines.

..."its the type of cheese you use"...said a spokesperson for the locale ex pat cheese freak from Fromage, via satellite phone from Toulouse spoken in a fragmented pidgin confluence of Dutch slang and Australianese last Tuesday, Wednesday and parts of the previous Monday evening. Its not the cheese as such, but more about the sandwich, she said. An argument with which is not to be trifled with. One would think, regardless of yor cheeses pedigree. ~Personally I have employed a "cheesy dude" that will propagate yon dairy product on the hop produced directly thro thy 'cheesemachine', a largish contraption often referred by its lesser known brand of that being the 'kettleofcheeses'. Bread of a matter of coarseness is harder to come by. 16 cases of fine balsamic vinegar a farm of lettuce nine highly paid, high up, hard nosed, uptight hierachial executives on sick leave with 7 RDO's a piece 8 olives a mange cat a bucket a bottle of catnip a globe 15 cd's of that violin dude a flask of smirnoff and six bottles of fortified frogstomp a packet of toothpicks a cats head hammer a bag of shingles 14 staples and one can of avegoodweekend. Also onboard would bee a slap up of curry 4 dim sims with soy sauce 2 potatoe cakes and a crab stick as opposed to a box of goon 45 breezers, 900 Dark'n'Stormies and a carton of Marlboro ps please include the boxed set of Enya and a knee deep basket of knitting.... which may or may not include a copy of Heather Locklear doing the macerate, or that would be makeraina (how does one spell that?!) pps.....6 JD's and a whoopee cushion as well plus a tray of sushi, four dolphins and a runaway tuna fisherman ...and hurry up with the loadout mate, we're on a tight schedule cheers

And all I was going to bring along was a bottle of Bluebottle, a tin of Vegemite and a packet of Arnott's Teddy Bear Biscuits. Have I under-planned?

All,
The required download file containing the GAAR 2009 - Event & Flight Briefings & Flight Situation Files has been added to the GAAR 2009 web site.
Additional updates to the site will be made progressively throughout today, including the 'Scores' page which will include the 'Target Times for each participant for each Flight Leg.
This will enable those participants who need to fly the event in advance, to plan and commence flying in the next few days.

I am a little up North of OZ and this is my first adventure in the Great GAAR, so I will bring along some Generoso Brandy, Chicerone to munch on and if I really feel sleepy during one of the flights I have some fine aged balut to eat. As for the cheese...I have some left over Casa de Bola that will fit the bill along with some Fita crackers.
I look forward to flying with all of you and in case you have not figured out where I am from (I am an Expat) perform a google or two on the above items and let me know what you find out.
Later, Ed B.
