The guys over at Avsim were talking about a cool VFR flight out of Hope airport in Canada. I accidentally clicked Hope, Arkansas, I guess. Deer! A whole gaggle, a murder, a flock! I sat mesmerized watching them and they changed directions toward me. Sure enough, the Big Buck leading the herd, the pack, the school of deer.... RAN RIGHT INTO MY PROP! Deer jerky? Nope. He ran right through my airplane. I was laughing out loud. So, while in Arkansas, I do what Arkansawyers do, and toured Walmart from the air. Meanwhile! Hope airport in Canada: Just outstanding scenery. I ran it in FSX first then switched to XPlane and flew the flight again. Just awesome! Follow the highway to the northeast from the airport and keep it low, but climbing. Sorry I don't know the airport code. Starts wit' a "C"

Version 9.31 has deer and birds. Especially at dawn and nightfall flocks of nuisance birds tend to distrupt landings and take-offs. While I haven't hit any deer there's been a few bird strikes. You'll hear a loud thump and may end up with damage. I suddenly got a cracked, blood spattered windshield once I was taking off in a B737. The birds came in as I had passed 80 knots so I decided to keep going. Not a great choice but I was really out of good options. With GA aircraft it's easier to avoid bird strikes by aborting take-offs and landings.
The birds and deer (and balloons) can be turned off if you decide to do without these random nuisances. They do add some amount of realism though. Birds and animals on the runway are a real world hazard.

I've flown through a flock of birds but didn't hit any before. I was wondering if that was realistically modeled. I was waiting on the deer, just in case they are. Kind of disappointing that they didn't break or crash the aircraft or anything.
