Bill, I first installed FSX on my new computer and was going back and forth between FS9 and FSX. AFter a few weeks I decided the detail on the airplanes was good enough to keep me in FSX a lot more than FS9. That's how I came to not have my FS9 disks anymore.
Don't give up on FSX, there's a lot to offer. I'm curious about your computer, though. Some quad-core machines probably won't run FSX very well. What did you get?

My system runs FSX just fine, I just don't like the way FSX operates. For instance, I like to use 2D panels. So every time I would go to spot view, then switch back to cockpit view I would lose my 2D panel and have to bring it up again. Also don't like the way it behaves when I use my hat switch or numbers pad to look left, right, back and so forth. Other than that it's just fine.

Well, I reloaded FSX and did some reading on it and made a few adjustments and maybe I can get it to work for me. I'm going to keep tinkering with it. I do like the detail much better than FS9.

Bill I’m with you, the views in FSX are all screwed up and the 2D has to be messed with all the time. I have been fooling around with FSX off and on for about a year now and have gotten nowhere with it. I believe that MS really screwed up by not just merging the great functionality of FS9 with the scenery and eye candy of FSX. They would have had a winner. No wonder that MS abandoned Flight Simm altogether. Here is a link that I found which gives a lot of tweaks for FSX. I am slowly going through this but no spectacular results yet. www.simforums.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=29041Bud

Well, this is all new to me. I'm a Virtual Cockpit kinda guy. I never would have known there was this sort of problem. Isn't the 2D default panel selection working? I haven't ever tried it as even in FS9 and 2002 I would fly the VC. I only use the 2D panel to use switches that cannot be accessed by way of the VC.

I've found that the default airplanes work great in FSX but I haven't found an add-on that works as well. The ones I've tried to add on say that they will work in FSX but they all have issues that are bothersome.

I cannot get FSx to behave properly at all. I have tried to follow all the advise that I have found but cannot get the thing to fly right. I like to fly my favorite the old PBY-5a. In FS9 I can see the end of the runway but in FDX I am looking down at my toes. Is there any way to set the eyelevel in FSX as it is InFS9 Help FS9 on active www.dem-productions.com/fs-pic/FS9 Runway.jpg[/img] FSX on active www.dem-productions.com/fs-pic/FSX Runway.jpg[/img]

Sorry to hear about the problem, and I can't offer you any help, but I can give you some info, for whatever it's worth. Also, I did not read the post here in detail, so am going on that. FSX has a known probelm concerning visual perspective and parallax. I have not gone into it any further than that, so I don't know why nor the cure. If you want to fly FS visually at lower altitudes, FS9 is very good, FSX no, because of the perspective problem. One example is that on an approach in FSX the runway will appear to be much shorter than it really is. Also you will appear to be too high and it will appear as your have to descend very steeply in order to get to the touchdown portion of the runway. This perspective problem also shows when your are trying to clear or out-climb obstacles when you are near the surface. I originally got this info from some developers and checked it with a friend of mine who purcheased FSX. Fortunately, for me, I have FS9.
lr. P.S. If you are ever in the wonderful armpit of the world, you can purchase a copy of FS9 at the various markets here in Mexico.

Hmmm I don't know what all the fuss is about I flew the payware Aerosoft PBY6A and the Stone/Goodrick PBY5A in the GAAR in FSX No Problems with either
Bud 1st I like your cockpit
2nd On your computer keyboard Hold down the control key and the shift key and keep tapping the Q key until the view comes up to where you want it
To go the other way(down) hold down the contol key and tap the Q key to get the view to go down
Hope this helps Chris

Chris, thanks SO much for your input. I never would have figured out to use Pan UP/Down to adjust the view! I've been fighting that problem ever since installing FSX. I'm now encouraged to do more in FSX (I fly the 2D panels). I was never imprressed with the scenery in FSX, better than FS9 but not as good as FS9 with FSGenisis. I recently installed textures from FS Scene and that helps a lot. Idaho in the spring now looks green and normal instead of looking like a desert.

You guys that want to raise or lower your seat so you have a better view of the runway can do so by going into your panel cfg file and change the first number in the eyepoint to a higher or lower number depending on whether you want to raise your view or lower it. If you use the virtual cockpit panel you must go into the aircraft cfg and change eyepoint.

Bill I want to amend my last post. The “ ctrl+shft+q and the ctrl+ Q” do indeed raise and lower the eye level to the horizion… but will not stay put. If I click on the map for instance the old view is back and I have to reset it all over again. I can and have raised the “eyepoint” number in the aircraft.cfg file but I can not find an “eyepoint” entry in any panel.cfg. I must have missed something once again.
