Two Pratt & Whitney R-2800's at climb power thundering low over downtown Cairns ! What a spectacular way to start the GAAR. At least if you're in it...

It's lonely in the far north.

With so much shallow water, no wonder Cook struck a reef.

After two hours night IMC, the Moresby runway is a welcome sight.

leg 2 startup at Pormpuraaw with half load and after having time to attach the GAAR logos on the wings last night so much flooded land ...... and solitude..... a sudden surprise.... an old devasted airfield ?!?! and then another airfield ,.... a cattle farm? or sheep??? anyway,....a good alternation to empty waste land WP 1 WP 2 the far north......... monotonic sound of engines across shallow water at last, turning to downwind RW 14 at Murray Island .....short runway to land may be okay for landing....but lets see take off tomorrow.... short final off loading may help tomorrow....

This is my modest allowable load: 4 second-hand cases à 75kgs - thats it! It's all Nes... (ops, no advertising here..), but I think it is "indian curry" in it..! Well, here I am with a payload of 300kgs, 159lt of fuel and a cruising range of 3h 30min. TOW: 1204kgs. (MTOW: 1206kgs.) When one considers, I have to remain in the air for about 2 1/2 hrs. - I am at the lower stop. So then, get the CLR and other CLR to be airborne - out of Cairns into the "dark side" of the York Peninsula! Welcome to GAAR 2012 Ready for DEP Rwy 15/B2 - at time 15:47 (not able for Rwy 12..) Traffic-related I have to wait... .. but then, off I go! Heading south to gain altitude.. .. then turning westbound.. .. over the "Tinaroo Falls Res".. .. over "dangerous country, spottet with rivers and rivulets, where a wrong step.." - hope they like indian curry.. Sorry Andrew.. .. and then, as an amenity at sunset and cautious navigation acc. the briefing, I reached the West Coast near YPMP. The landing was careful on Rwy 32 - just two minutes behind schedule. I have used 126lts, so only 33lts left. Obviously I was happy to see some fuel drums. But with a closer look: "property of Capt. Zlogg!".. I wonder! Nevertheless, half of my cargo is gone! Cheers and see you on next leg..

"Satisfactory" short field landing accomplished - nothing to brag about! Freight requirements, with associated heavier landing weights, were a bit unexpected. Folks who bought grandstand seats were disappointed. ;D Attachments:

Leg 2: At 3000ft and 205 knots, in- and out of cloud, forcing me to go to instruments for some longer periods. The turn over Cape York. Reducing speed and approaching Murray- and Dawar Islands. Skidding tires when we have to step on the brakes hard! The other side of the runway and bushes rapidly coming into sight! But we made it with even some runway to spare.

Thanks to Andrew's foresight - I can fuel up to 159lt. Tks. for that! After a extensive flight briefing - full power for dep Rwy 14 at YPMP After a brief right turn, going up over west side coast of the Peninsula to 3500ft AMSL - heading north. Here, the Torres Strait... .. and here my bulky luggage! (make sure, they are secured..) After doing Waypoint one and two, I reached the northern most tip of Cape York. A pleasant view - the coral reef's in the Strait. Top of descent.. down I go for Rwy 14 YMUI ~ 1500 ft AMSL (Island is identified..) On a mid final Rwy 14 - a bit bumpy.. After all, a nice landing - more or less in time! Offload of the remaining cargo from Cairns! All in good time - I need a cold Beer now - preparing my tent under the wing and maybe there will be participators to enjoy a BBQ. PS: You see the drums on the right? MY FUEL!! Hands off! (eh, we can talk about it..!) Cheers for Leg#3

This is a late afternoon flight out of Murray Island to PNG (17.30pm)? - looks like a bitter moon in the swiss alps this time of year! My tent is wet, luckily no cargo - so I deposit the staff on the backseats! Well: easy-peasy.. "The long goodbye" by Robert Altman - taking off into the black night - in rain! Whithersoever - heading east and up to 4500ft AMSL Awestruck! The Gulf of Papua by moon light. That remind's me on a nightflight from old VTBS to OMDB in a DC-8-63. The Co-Pilot was trying to call Madras on HF (on those days..) "MADRAS, MADRAS - BALAIR 601 calling MADRAS on 5420" Result: signal- and fluctuation noise" Well, thats was 30 Years ago! My vacant expression for the next 98 minutes! After an RNAV approach to Rwy 14L, finally the release - a proper PAPI-glidepath on short final! Dear Andrew, you exercise the mind of all GAAR Pilots - in Rain!
