Did this one the other day in the FSX Grumman Goose:
KGTF Great Falls, Montana
HLN Helena VOR, roughly midway
KBTM Bert Mooney at Butte, Montana
There's a nice highway that cuts through the mountains and as you approach Butte, a saddle opens up unto the valley bellow. This is probably at or near the continental divide.

The problem with any of the versions of FS is that they do not show terrain effects on wind. The wind can get nasty near a "saddle". I saw some effects flying in the gentle New Hampshire mountains. I believe all of the stories about wind effects in the West where the pressure gradients near mountains are much stronger. A lot of pilots in the west find turbochargers useful for climbing out of downdrafts.

Funnily enough, in a few months I'll be driving part of this route on my way down from Calgary to Jackson before running back up the other side of the continental divide to cross Glacier NP on the way back to Calgary. I'll see if I can bring back some pictures.

Hi Alan, I don't know your route or schedule, but I imagine you will be coming up I15 and I90 to Missoula, then up 93 to Kalispell and West Glacier. Be advised that Going to the Sun Highway across Glacier may not be open until July. Check out their site for information. If you have the time and are adventurous you might consider continuing on I90 to Coeur d'Alene and we could meet for a chat. You could then take 95 north from CdA to highway 2 and then over to Kalispell. That's a very scenic route, probably would be a day out of your way. Allen

Tom: Yes, that's one of many things we might have by now if MS had taken FS seriously the last seven years. I've experienced an extremely mild form of this when approaching a saddle north of Mena, Arkansas a couple years ago.
Allan: Please let us know your route so we can fly it in the sim. (Or if I look at a map it'll be obvious?)

I'll do that - hope you're sitting comfortably it will be about 1600-1700 miles.
The icing on the cake would be meeting up with Allen - that and seeing the odd grizzly! We might have to go to the refuge in West Yellowstone to manage that.
Basically the route will take us from Calgary up to Banff, then back down to Waterton Lakes, Choteau, Helena, West Yellowstone, Jackson, Hailey, Salmon, Missoula, meet d'Allen, Kallispell and back to Calgary. I'll figure out some suitable airports.
Talking of airports, last year I stepped into the wrong elevator at Heathrow and got the wrong side of security again. This meant we missed our flight to Washington, and were the last standbys let onto the only other flight of the day. I've been threatened with 50 shades of grief if I do that again this year!

Allan, here are the airports along your route that I found. Calgary CYYC (of course) Banff CYBA There doesn't seem to be an airport at Waterton Lakes, but Pincher Creek, CZPC, would be a good waypoint. Choteau KCII Helena KHLN West Yellowstone KWYS Jackson Hole KJAC Hailey KSUN Salmon KSMN Missoula KMSO Coeur d'Alene KCOE Kallispell S27 On the return to Calgary fly over the Going to the Sun Highway to Babb, 49S I'll probably fly in FS9 (with FS Genisus) because the terrain in the FSX map sucks.

For VFR, many people use skyvectors. Do they cover Canada? I think it's skyvectors.com . lr.

Hi Guys, Gisela and I had a very enjoyable chat with Allan and Denise over lunch yesterday. Then they travelled on to Sandpoint, Bonners Ferry and Kalispell. The Going to the Sun Highway is now open so today they should be enjoying their drove over Glacier.

Now back across the pond. It was a tremendous break from work, and the highlight was getting to meet Allen and Gisela in Coeur d'Alene. The skies cleared as we went north to Bonners Ferry and across to Kalispell for a scenic run through northern Idaho and into Montana again. East Glacier proved to be a smaller town than I'd expected after we ran over the Going to the Sun Road, but the Huckleberry Pie in Luna's Cafe is worth the detour if you are in the area. Heading back to Calgary the border crossing took an hour and the flooding was still evident from Highway 2 as we passed High River.
So now it is back to tackling the garden and all the emails at work!

I know that others have written on the topic, but for a good and informative read, I can strongly recommend "Pilots' Weather: A Flying Manual" by the late Ann Welch.
