Here a some tweaks- FS9. In various groups depending on the basic idea.
1) This can be done by everybody...
terrain_default_radius=3.500000
terrain_extended_radius=4.000000
terrain_extended_levelS=232
In the [display] section there is this line:
texture_bandwidth_MULT=40 <--- this is too low for current video cards
Change it to read:
[display]
upper_Framerate_limit=25
texture_bandwidth_MULT=55 (try values from 50 through to 200, depending on video card speed. 55 is a good start)
TextureMaxLoad=10
Add these lines directly after the TextureMaxLoad-entry:
runway_lights_surface_scalar=0.9 //scales edge, center,end,touchdown,runways
runway_lights_vasi_scalar=0.5 //scales vasi/papi lights
runway_lights_approach_scalar=0.5 //scales approach light bars
runway_lights_strobe_scalar=0.9 //scales rails and odals
Slide mip down to 4
Slide lights down to 6
press the "-" (minus) key to zoom out to 75%
Anti-virus will most definitely affect FS9 performance.
The above info is from, well, I don't know.. But it is very abbreviated.
2) The following should be done if you are a serious FS user. Go to Black Viper (dot com) and you will see computer tweaks for several operating systems. Choose the one you are using. Hopefully, you are using Windows XP as that uis the best platform for FS9. If you wish to argue the point, go ahead, but I won't get involved.
Anyhow, there are,or were, 3 levels offered. Levels like, SAFE for Everybody, More Powerful, and Major Power Users. Many years ago, I ran the SAFE part and FS for a week. Then I ran the next level for a week. Then the level that shuts down just about everything except what your computer absolutely needs to run. The third level works very well, no problems. I did talk to several Engineers (Computer type), who said there were certain things you can not shut down, but they were wrong, as, they were also wrong about the real function of certain items. Now, whenever I set up a computer for someone, I go straight to the third level that shuts just about everything down- never heard a problem. I will say that Black Viper is about the best thing you can do that's free.
3) Going to get arguments here. Again, I won't be involved. I always do the following just before opening FS:
a) clean out (eliminate) recent documents b) eliminate temporary files c) eliminate history d) eliminate temporary internet files; D) run CCLEANER (free) or your better payware program; E) defrag.
Some will tel you defrag is bad for your hard drive. Can't tell it by me. I've been doing it almost daily since I got this new set-up- like 2008. No problems here.
4) Want to spend some money? Best thing you can do for FS9 is buy a more powerful processor. The processor makes FS9 fly. Then, if your video card could be upgraded, do it. How is 1G ram? It's okay- IF you are only running FS9. But if you are also running things like Flight Deck Companion, Radar Contact and high quality add-on a/c such as the PMDG or Level D or DreamFleet heavies, add more RAM.
Does Active Sky or programs like Ultimate Traffic need more RAM? I don't know. I use them, and have no complaints. Oh, yeah, you should be running your monitor at 1040 x whatever the next number is. MS and most panel designers designed the program that way.
This is for FS9. Are you usinf FSX? Oh, I'm sorry. Get FS9, load it with good scenery, land class, and mesh and run a great simulator. Well, great except for a long list of faults and limitations.
Get a multi-monitor set-up. Build a homemade cockpit shell. Get a can with a lid and pour a bit of diesel fuel in it to get a good whiff at the ramp. Flying airline routes? DC3 or whatever? Buy yourself a nice serving tray, nice set of dishes, linen, and have your wife, or the maid (with the proper stew unifrom), bring you coffee, dinner, etc. Put your set-up in a seperate room with a swithch taht sounds a chime in the living room. Tell your "stew" that when she hears the chime, you're ready to eat the meal. Tell your wife you are on a route, and if she comes in to see you she must say, "How's everything- we getting in on time?" Or "You boys need anything?" You are not to be bothered by day to day household trivia.
