Kamchatka - Dutch Harbor (PADU), AK We continue our scenic flight to Victoria, Vancouver Island, to deliver the A-26 which was loaned from the BC air museum for GAAR2009.Early the next morning, we are already preparing our flight to Dutch Harbor in the Aleutians. A preserved Lisonov-2 (Russian-build DC-3) is watching in the freezing cold. In the background the magnificent Koryaksky vulcano. Ready for taxi. Note the elegant slim lines of that Ilyushin Il-62. It is only a matter of time and these classic jets are history... Two generations of Tupolevs are parked here: a Tu-154 and in front the '757 look-alike' Tu-204. Leaving the ramp and entering the peculiar long straight taxiway through the woods to the runway. The military lay-out is obvious. Emerging at the open area near the runway and we're welcomed by a MIG-fighter on standby. Passing some shelters and concrete bunkers along the way. Cold War relics... Turning onto the old, worn concrete runway. Poor tyres... This strip could do with a new top layer! Nice view on Kamchatka-airport/airbase as we fly back overhead. Note the many hardstands in the woods. Lovely view on the Koryaksky- (left) and Avachinsky vulcanos in this crisp morning. ...and soon we're leaving the island. Finally! Contact with Anchorage control. Overflying the Aleutians at FL360. Turning in for a landing on Dutch Harbor/Unalaska Airport. In 2002, the State of Alaska renamed it Tom Madsen Airport in honor of Charles Thomas Madsen Sr., a bush pilot who was killed in an airplane accident that year. However, the Federal Aviation Administration still refers to it as Unalaska Airport. Full reverse and autobrake on MAX on this 3900 ft (!!) runway. ...but we made it. --------- just. Entering the tiny ramp. 'Guess they don't see MD-11's a lot overhere... "Mommy, mommy, there's a JumboJet outside!!" ..... "Don't tell your mother funny stories, Johnny!!"to be continued...

Dutch Harbor - Cold Bay (AK) Leaving the ramp of Unalaska (Dutch Harbor). We are lightly fueled for this short runway. Ready to line-up and waiting for a floatplane. Strangely, this mechanic is not at all distracted by our roaring MD-11 passing by at full thrust! Tucking up the gear and setting course for Cold Bay. Descending into solid overcast at Cold Bay. This field will be our short fuel stop for Anchorage. Landing at Cold Bay, AK. We will leave here again in a few hours. ..to be continued

Ed , here's another one... Cold Bay - AnchorageLater that afternoon, we are taxiing out in fog. ... and 10 minutes later we are emerging from thick cloud into the bright sunshine. En-route over Lake Clark, north of Iliamna, AK. Approaching Anchorage and descending. This ERA DHC had to wait for us to land. It may now line up behind. Taxi-in at the Cargo area. Some civil Cargo C-130's will keep us company. It seems we are having a MD-11 Freighter fly-in ??! to be continued....

Next leg: Anchorage – Ketchikan, AK. We are heading more southbound now. This is the stunning view while departing Anchorage. Looking to the Glacier Bay area from 33000 feet. The route will keep the Alaskan coast on our left most of this flight. Crossing Montague Island... …and much later Biorka Island... ..and a little later, the snow capped Baranof Island due south of Juneau. Nice view towards the north east. This is indeed a VERY scenic area! Too soon, we are ordered by Anchorage Control to descend towards Ketchikan. Over Tongass Narrows on finals. Note the ‘Holland America Line’-cruise ship! The HAL is a regular visitor of this area, visiting glaciers and looking for whales. Somewhere in that inlet is the airport. Runway 11 is faintly visible dead ahead. Coming in ... Ketchikan's economy is based upon tourism and fishing, and the city is known as the "Salmon Capital of the World." The Misty Fjords National Monument is one of the area's major attractions. After landing, we taxi back to the ramp. We call it a day! I’m sure there’s fresh salmon on the menu tonight. To be continued…

Ketchikan - Victoria (Vancouver Island) - "Invader Homecoming"Leaving Ketchikan in dreadfull weather. It's raining heavily! Climb out to the south, and heading for Port Hardy VOR. Near Prince Rupert, BC. Another great panoramic view from the flightdeck. At FL 350. Looking up Rivers Inlet near Calvert Island, just before entering Vancouver Island. Nearing Vancouver Island at the Port Hardy VOR. Overhead mountaneous north-Vancouver Island. Descending into Victoria International. Below the city of Nanaimo can be seen, and across, the Canadian mainland. Downwind 09 Victoria and reducing to 220 kts. Touch down!! The first half of this mission is accomplished; we returned our A-26 Invader to it's home, the British Columbia Air Museum, here at Victoria Airport. Taxi-by the local aeroclub. Yes, there's the museum. Soon, the unloading begins... ... and not much later, the Invader is stripped from all GAAR 2009 markings and returned to it's old place outside in the gras. She has been a great GAAR plane... So long baby !!
