Anyone know if there is a way to edit cfg files in FSX without having to copy the cfg file and pasting it into some other location ( like documents )? That's the only way I can save changes to the cfg file.

Double click on the file. First time it should ask which file you want to use to open it Use notepad and it should open

I have no problem opening the file. The problem is that I can't save the file after I make changes. I have to copy the file, move it to another location, make the changes, then move it back where it belongs.

Double click on the cfg you want to edit, make your changes then in the top left click on File then click save. That's the way I do it.

That's the way I've always done it too. In FS9, I had no problems doing that but in FSX it won't save the file. Anyway, it won't work on my system.

Sounds like the file you are trying to edit is in a cab file That won't work you have to extract or copy that before you can edit or save it

I was asked to write on making Panel changes on my aircraft. I am not familiar with any of the newer flight simulators , just FS98 and FSX , so any thing else you are on your own. First advice , go to a Bluegrass rally site and down load Tom Goodricks FT Timer . I install it on ever thing and it has good instructions.
First thing I do is start Flight simulator. and load the aircraft I want to change and study the 2D panel for blank areas and insterments I might want to move and/or switch. Then on paper note where I want to locate them by something like ALT.<>VS Altimmter swap with Vs(rate of climb) or VOR1 <compass^oilpressure to locate VOR1 above oil pressure gauge and left of compass. When a rough set of directions is written down ,I choose a diffrent aircraft and move FS to the task bar. Next step is go to C: and thru the programs too your aircraft folders , open the aircraft you wish to change , open the panel folder find the PANEL configuration. I next right click on it and choose RENAME them move the cursor line with the arrow keys an nape it "panel.org" this way you have one saved if you goof up.
Now I copy the panel.org to MY Documents when there Rename it again to just "panel" now open it if it ask what program to use choose NOTEBOOK. Once chosen click and open. The fun begins.

This is what the open panel folder looks like. An open panel config file in my documents. High lighted additions.

Now , you look at the lines gauge1=such an such, 001,002,003,003 gauge1 , these must be kept in order so if you are adding a gauge to the bottom of the list it would be the next number gauge2 The 001 is the number of horizontal divisions from the LEFT side of the computer screen . the higher the number the further to the RIGHT the center of the Gauge will be. 002 is the Vertical divisions from the TOP of the computer screen , the higher the number the lower the center location of the gauge. 003 the horizontal length of the gauge, 004 the vertical width . You will notice round gauges are 001,002,60,60 radios an such 001,002,150,45..
to swap locations between two gauges , high lite the description " cessna heading indicator" the CUT it out and past it on the gauge line you want to swap then high lite the gauge on that line, CUT and paste in the blank space left from "cessna heading indicator" gauge line. NOW you know why we renamed an made a panel.org...
If you want to add a Radio Stack to an older panel; find the radio stack or radio Panel windo , usually below the MAIN PANEL. I remove everything BUT the window number an description then close the panel config .It will come up SAVE or DO NOT SAVE , hit SAVE. Then I back arrow the page to the aircraft list. Aircraft with with seprate aircraft stacks, like the Cessna 208 ,open the folder, panel folder , open panel config , find the window Radio Stack and high lite everything below the discription and COPY , then arrow back to MY DOCUMENTS ,open the Panel config and paste into the RADIO STACK WINDOW.
ADJUSTMENT ; Close the panel and save , now COPY the panel in my documents , and go back to original panel folder and paste the modified panel into the folder, send folders to the task bar. Now reopen flight simulator , chose the airplane your changing the panel on , and see where the gauges show up , the it is a matter of moving the left or right or up an down (001 , 002) or changing the size (003 , 004) some times I still forget to change the #gauge= Number and it will not show if not in order. Every time you want to make ANY change you must #1 select another Aircraft and send flight simulator to the task bar. the open the folders from the task bar. open My Documents then the panel , make the changes , save , copy , then paste in the aircraft's PANEL FOLDER . then close it to task bar. reopen flight simulator , select aircraft and see where things moved.
There maybe easier ways , but this is what I figure out

I run into this from time to time. If you haven't done this: open aircraft folder and Right click the cfg file, go to "properties" then to "security", click on "edit security", scroll down to "users" then check the permission boxes, then click "apply" then "ok". You can do this for an individual file or the whole aircraft.
