Thr TXL-5 is a modification of Tom Goodrick's Velocity. I found an article in KITPLANES magazine on the turbo version. I made a new folder, made minor mods to the .cfg and .air files and gave it a new paint job. Incedentaly, Jim Price brought his record setting Long-EZ to our flyin last year. His paint job is a lot like Tom"s on his Velocity. Allen

I got out of Panama City with the Luscombe tanked up, 75 gallons and a projected burn of 3 gph @ 92 knots. You figure, it sure amounts to a sore bum.
The initial trip was over water and I departed in the wee small hours so as to able to tackle the western Colombian Andes in early daylight and that went just fine. Up to 12,000' for that bit. Then the long haul over the flat lands, Mato Grosso and all that crap. Not really but what's the difference, it's rather horizontal. Anyway that went on forever until we reached a tad west of the longitude of Machu Picchu when I headed due south.
Now things got interesting as we penetrated the mountains and were obliged to keep alive by avoiding the hard bits. Getting to the Machu Picchu location was easy but then I had to find my way to Cuzco without getting to the sort of altitude that needs several weeks acclimatisation 'cos we don't carry Oxy in this primitive machine. It was a very interesting trip which had a few 'moments' but all turned out fine and Cuzco welcomed me with promises of "A very good time Senor" but after 16 hours in the air all I needed was a single bed, Muchas gracias.

When I got to Panama City I hit ground fog at about 2000', fortunately they have an ILS and I made it in OK. I refeuled there, 93 gallons in the mains and 16 gallons in an emergency tank at the back of the baggage compartment. After climbing to 15,500' I have about 6 hours at a GS of 200 knots, at 65%. I refeuled again at SELT and now I'm on my way to SPZO. Allen

It is nearly a year since I headed south for Latin America and, ultimately, Madagascar. Several computer breakdowns and a small heart operation have intervened but I have resumed the trip and progressed to Pemba, Mozambique. This seems to be a logical place to depart for the Mozambique Channel crossing however something else has loomed to block my path - the Canadian Rockies hop list. So that is where I am now headed. The flight down to Pemba has been mixed, long stretches of dead boring green flat lands then some mountains, AND THEN the lakes. Lakes Kivu, Tanganyika and Nyasa all came in for a close inspection, very good indeed. I will make landfall in Madagascar at --------(wait for it)--------Nosy Be. YES.!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes Lou, a leaking mitral valve had me being looked at by various cardiologists for the first six months of the year, tests forever. A very frustrating period where nobody was making any decisions about what to do about the problem. Then a surgeon (self described "Sort of a plumber") looked at me and in five minutes declared that he would fix me up in a "couple of weeks time". And he did. Fortunately he was able to do a repair so I have no foreign bits on board and I am now, 10 weeks on, as fit as a flea. And all those tests proved that I don't have any circulatory problems, Eeeharrr!
It seems that I haven't commented on the end of the Long way home. It was an interesting experience, as indeed it would have been for the bods involved in 1941. Just under 162 hours flying and it was great to settle onto the water beside La Guardia.
So next is Madagascar.

Hi Ed, Good to hear about the lack of foreign bits. I just finished the Canadian Rockies Hop, so now it's back to the Madagascar run. I just left Accra, DGAA, on my way to Brazzaville - I think I've been there before. Then I'm going to head on down to Gaborone in Botswana to see if I can visit The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency before heading on to Madagascar.
