Colombia? Time to check the oxygen bottles.
There's one or two unusual hazards, quite apart from high-altitude airports: the runway at SKLA is crossed by a road (perhaps they are twinned with Gibraltar, although I suspect there aren't any traffic lights); and what about the the golf course on very late finals into SKMD runway 02?
Looks like more GAR fun. ;D

John, Good to see you are on the ball, just as long as you stay off the golf course. Then again, if it was Bangkok, and Qantas' QF1 service, maybe we could slide in for 9 holes or so! ;D I understand they have officially renamed the hole there, "The Qantas Approach". But back in Colombia! As for the road, I'd be more concerned about tapir or peccary excursions onto the runway. A 500lb tapir meeting your plane head-on is not going to make for a good day. Other than that, the approach to SKLA alone, is a tricky one, to say the least. Cheers Andrew P.S. I hope you don't mind me moving your post to the GARSA Forum.

Nice work, Andrew - hope to have a team entry from Mutley's Hangar as per GAAR. BTW, are there blue tapirs in Colombia? Cheers - Dai.

Andrew I am planning to join the rally. I missed the last ones due to Microsoft headaches and timing. Again timing is going to be an issue. I am going out of town August 30 and won't be back until August 7th. Can I presubmit the legs that are in that time frame once I settle in and register? I figured to put the corsair through its paces again.

George,
Good to hear from you. As per my relaxed approach and management of all previous events, and as it says on the GARSA web site, happy to take early PIREPs from 25 Aug to assist those committed in Sep.
Cheers Andrew
P.S. Hope you don't mind me moving this post to the GARSA forum.

Thats great Andrew and I realized as soon as I sent it that I should have put it in the forum. Playing with my timing right now to get the numbers consistant.

Hi Andrew, Thanks for providing the GARSA 2011. Just to be picky, on the Event Briefing, you mention the approaches to be DOWNWIND, CROSSWIND, and FINAL segments. Shouldn't the CROSSWIND be BASE? The way I understand the pattern approaches are: (1) Crosswind, Downwind, Base, and Final; (2) Straight In, Final; and (3) Downwind, Base, Final.
Greetings, Martin

The Special Comment for leg 3 is the same as the one for leg 2.
Picky me again. Martin

After reading the "Visual Flight Rules" link, I miss-understood the "Event Briefing". Martin, Thanks for the feedback. I can sometimes miss things, or it might make sense to me (as the author) when writing it, but when someone else reads it, it's a different story. My reference to Final segments implied a Base being flown as part of the circuit. As for your other comment about the Special Comments being the same. That is deliberate, as it refers to the same airport (first as the arrival airport and then as the departure airport). If you were using RW aerodrome and procedures charts and were reviewing your flight planning the Special Comment would be on the airport specific chart. It might seem like duplication, but it's just me being completely thorough, or as much as I try to be. Again, thanks for the feedback. Cheers Andrew

Almost last minute, I signed-up for this rally and looked around for a suitable aircraft. Only option that came along was a worn-down, ex-Aero Norte C-46. Had to re-register the aircraft in Colombia, since the C of A was expired long time ago. After some hard work by a group of skilled technicians at Villavicencio, she was finally declared airworthy and I managed to fly this "collection of spare parts in close formation" up to Bogota, in preparation for the rally. She may look like a tramp, but she flies like a goddess. LET THE GAMES BEGIN ! ;D
