I have departed Vancouver for Ketchikan and followed the coast at 5000' so as not to miss the detail. A beautiful trip seeing the great number of sounds, inlets, whatever. One can see the hand of Slartibartfast in that design.
Touched down on Rwy 11 at PAKT a bit over 3 hours after lifting off Canadian tarmac having burned 111 gals, not too bad for the low altitude. And a greaser of a landing too, but a trifle wasted without a cheering band of avid fans. And I then had to wait ignominiously parked on the grass by the 29 threshold while a heavy took off.
Next stop for me is CSR on the southern outskirts of Anchorage and the closest field to the Bertleson coffee pot, it is a 665 nm leg. Again I will be sightseeing on the way, mainly coastal, as I plan on seeing plenty of the mountains on the return southwards, Ed

Well, I am moving again. I flew the Phenom 100 from S47 to COE in about an hour. I messed up slightly as I set up for the wrong runway and had to circle back and do it right! The landing went fine. Enroute I flew at FL210 and 382 knot with a little tailwind in Fair Weather.

Got away from Ketchikan (PAKT) around 1100 local time and opted for an ‘Inside Passage’ style trip as I headed NW along the coast at 1800’. This was good as the cloud base was around 2500’, although broken. RW was in use.
We flew along Clarence Strait then west into Sumner Strait to head north along the coast of Kupreanof Island past Kake . West again and around the southern tip of Admiralty Island to fly along Chatham Strait, at 800’ now due to some pesky scud that was blocking the view. Into Icy Strait and out over the open ocean at Cape Spencer. The low level had kept the speed down to around the 155-160 kts so as we set course for Anchorage a climb to a more efficient altitude was initiated.
The remainder of the flight was at FL210 with a 30 kt gain in speed and a reduced fuel burn so grins were trumps. We overflew PANC at 10,000’ then backtracked on descent to Campbell Field (CSR) where we touched down after 4.5 hours in the air.
The rugged coastal scenery is stunning and it easy to see why it is such a popular tourist attraction.
Now Doctor Jim, how is that coffee pot going? Ed

After a few days on the ground my next move is to have a local flight looking at the mountains to the north and north-west of Anchorage. That will require some very good wx with the tops poking into FL200.

Got the good weather and it took a 2 hour flight to take in the Mt McKinley area and the Kichatna Range. Topped out at FL205 which gave a good close up of the McKinley peak, the highest on the North American continent. Thanks to FSGenesis 38m mesh it was spectacular scenery and the approach to the mount flying up a glacier was a knock out.
Stayed a little high on the return to Campbell strip and had to go around but the landing was ok, finally.
The Bertleson coffee is almost exhausted so it's off to warmer climes any time now

Headed west from Campbell airstrip to have a look at historic Whitehorse flying as low as I dare in order to fly between the mountains rather than over them, spectacular too ! From Whitehorse it was down to Skagway via the old miners' trail. The last bit is steep and narrow and something to see, great. I decided to camp at Skagway rather than the planned Juneau stopover. After a relaxed cruise from Skagway at FL260 we are finally back in the 48 and all is tucked away at KCOE. Now if I can find Allen we can have a coffee or two or something with a little more sting ! Ed

Moving on from Peterson territory, Coeur d'Alene, to Whitefish MT where there are domiciled two retirees from Atlanta GA who used to work in Oz many years ago. I flew in there light as it is not a big field and we all decided on a tour of Yellowstone. Over the fence to Glacier Park airport where we fuelled up and headed south at no height to speak of, by passing Missoula. The mountains further south got a good viewing as far as the Bitterroot national forest and we turned for Yellowstone.
Approaching the caldera at low level suddenly Old Faithful let fly with a fountain display and we were able to buzz the area. (Thanks are due here to FSGenesis 10m scenery of the park) We gave the whole NP a thorough going over and then climbed to FL210 and returned to 58S direct.
After depositing my friends back at their wheels at Whitefish field it was once more into KFCA for a tank top up. Into the blue for the flight at FL250 to Winnepeg where George Adair, 'ole Boney Wings, hangs out. Very flat country after all those mountains since leaving Seattle on this jaunt. Ed

From CYWG, Winnipeg, we headed a little way northwards and did a touch and go in honour of the Gimli Glider at CYGM, then to St Paul Minnesota, KMSP. This seems to be Cam Guthrie's hideout.
Maybe I can catch up on some Prarie Home Companion and a bit of the Keillor news from LW while I am here.
