ozarksfirst.com/fulltext?nxd_id=802852This is Truman's birthplace, 30 miles north of Joplin. A pilot from Ft. Scott KS, just across the border, was flying a training mission in a Piper Pawnee and stall-spun into the ground. You may recall a guy I knew was killed in a crash last fall where a closer friend was the main witness. The grass field that crash airplane missed at dusk back then was the home field of the spraying outfit that had just hired the trainee who died yesterday. The man was flying a single engine Piper Pawnee crop dusting plane. After making several "touch and go" landings at the airport, the pilot began practicing crop dusting.
Pilots who spoke with KODE in Joplin helped prepare the plane for takeoff. They say no chemicals were loaded in the plane at the time of the crash.
Witnesses say after making one simulated dusting run at a field just west of the airport, the pilot began to circle back for another pass, when the plane crashed. I heard he may not have had chemicals, but he may have had water.
