Some help please, guys. I've been given a new computer for Christmas, upgrading from XP to Windows 8. For some reason, FS9 won't run on it, so the Beverley which was supposed to take part this year won't be putting in an appearance. I've had FSX for a while, but the old computer didn't cope too well, so I've not used it much. Now comes the question. I'm trying to amend config files in FSX. They open in wordpad, the same as FS9, but the computer will not let me save them in their amended forms. This means that I can't, for example, add the Flight Timer to the panel. Any ideas?? Thanks.

Hi Rattler. Good to hear from you again, sorry you are having problems. I have Windows 7 and don't plan on getting Win8, so I don't know much about it. But your problem sounds like an "administrator issue". Can you log into Win8 as administrator and then edit and save your files? Allen

Thanks Allen. Good thought, but I'm already logged as administrator. I've tried both wordpad and notepad. They both come up as access denied, but notepad says I should contact the administrator for permission. Duh!!! Don't you just love computers?

Hi Tattler, One last try. Right click on the .cfg file, select properties, and open the security tab (I have attached a .jpg from my computer, don't know if it will show on the new board). Anyway, make sure the activities you need are checked under the allow heading. Sorry if you have already done this. Allen

Curious, I am aware of folk running FS9 in W8 - I'll see what I can dig out on that.
For W7 one of the tweaks was to install either on a second hard drive and/or in a non-standard directory. i.e instead of c:\program files\micro games\fsx, install in c:\flightsimX.
There is something about the default security settings that is causing the problems in changing cfg and ini files in program\ms etc folders in W7 and above.
So if you de-install from the default first - that resets the installation count for fsx - and then reinstall in a separate folder like C:\flightsimX you may be able to get round these issues.
Installing on a separate hard drive is apparently good for reducing conflict with operating system temporary files.
I have fs9 on a d: drive and fsx in an e:\flightsimx folder on a W7 machine. It's slow but has an absurd amount of drive space.

Allen and Allan, thanks for the suggestions. I checked the security as advised, and it has me down as having full control. However it still says contact the administrator (me). I tried loading FS9 on the other drive, but it still isn't happy. One thing I did try was loading the Beverley from FS9 to FSX. The aircraft comes out, and flies OK, but most of the instruments are FS98 vintage and won't load. I thought since the .cfg file was from FS9 I might be able to amend it and take instruments from elsewhere, but it still won't let me save an amended file. Next step is to try amending it in FS9 and transferring the new file across, but I'm not too hopeful. Still, nil desperandum.

Success!! A mish-mash, but it worked. I can amend the Bev panel in FS9, set it up, and then import the whole aircraft across to FSX. I've just flown it using the panel from the Valetta, and it was fine (ish). Work to be done, but the Bev is coming to Oz. Oh, and I've heard all the jokes. "You know, you could build an aircraft from that" Ha!!

Remove the cfg from the Aircraft folder to your desktop. Then carry out your modification and it should allow you to save it. Once done, return it to your Aircraft folder.

Thanks Speedbird. I had another thought, which worked. My laptop still had FS9, so I transferred the Bev to it from my external drive, modded the panel (every instrument had to be replaced with a more modern one), saved again on the external, and loaded back into FSX. A bit long-winded, but it worked. I still need a throttle quadrant, and since I don't want to go through all that again, I'll try your method from another aircraft.
Thanks, that method works. A useful tip for anyone else who may be having problems. Now to get some crews positioned promptly to get the beast out to Oz.

@ Andrew. Is there some error in my calculations? Looking at the schedule, i notice the first flight as 269 NM yet direct on FSC only shows 128 NM. Has YPFT been moved? Sorry about posting here but i did not want to start a new thread.

Sorry about posting here but i did not want to start a new thread. John, Welcome. It's part of a cunning plan. No, not really, just a common mistake in assuming the Flight Legs are point to point. You have overlooked the Note in red above the Flight Schedule table which states, 'The Flight Legs and distances are NOT necessarily point to point as Flight Legs may involve intermediate navigation waypoints.'. All will become clear shortly when I post the detailed Flight Briefing documents and Flight Situation files. Cheers Andrew

Was having one of my moments when a glimmer of light shows in the light bulb above my head . since for the past years the test flights have taken place at KUNURRA (YPKU) maybe some one with skills could make a Bluegrass Airlines Australian out post and hanger scenery like was done for the Alaska division ,a place to have entries could get work done on aircraft and relax before the test flight and on too the starting points , the division could use it as a stop of for routes in the area.
