Hey guys! I'm thinking that I'd like to learn to fly the DC-3, using the stock panel with all the old gauges and levers. Are there any updated files I should know about, such as .air file or aircraft.cfg? Should I just fly with the stock files? Thanks!! Jerry Luke Tillamook, Oregon

Hi Jerry,
I use the air file that came with Norm Holmans DC-3 package from DC-3 airways. DC3-RR4.air
When I flew the GAAR 2008 I had to use the default air file and aircraft.cfg and it did not fly according to specs provided by Trev Morson.
Tom Goodrick did an airfile to correct adverse yaw which I have but don't use. I think its a default air file plus the yaw correction.
I use Norm Holmans panels and Trev Morsons sound.
My aircraft.cfg has been modified numerous times.
I know have 32 different textures!

If you look on www.flightsim.com for "Dave Bitzer and Mark Beaumont" you'll find everything you need for a DC-3 from three tank to five tank configurations. For more useful panels to suit every set-up go to DC3 Airways. Once you're an expert or even before, DCA run rallies about this time of year which allow you to practise flying and navigational procedures in the Dakota.

Thanks guys! Is the stick response supposed to be so sluggish? Maybe I'm used to flying the Cub!

Thanks for starting this thread, Jerry. Maybe some of the guys can help me. I'm looking for textures for a R4D-5, USN BuNo 50746. I was a radioman on it, 1954-55, at NAS Anacostia. I remember it as all metal finish with 746 on the fin, national insignias, and US Navy on the sides. However, the fuselage may have had a white top down to the windows. I've looked in Flight Sim and some other places but have not had much luck. I can find R4Ds but not in bare metal with national insignias.

Allen & others Here is a pic of my R4D, USN skin. This is the bird that I flew in the Navy over in England durinbg the war. It is a MAAM product but I have modified it a bit but it still gives realistic flights. www.dem-productions.com/fs-pic/My R4D-6.jpg[/img]

Thanks, guys. Bud, I was hoping for a freeware texture. Bill, yeah, I had looked at yours, but I don't like the orange, mine didn't have that, since it wasn't used in Antarctica. But I think I can repaint it, if not then I'll get Bud's version. Allen

Allen,
The repaint kit available for the default DC-3 contains a bare metal base option. The MAAM model is the only RD4 one that has accurate engine inlet ducting IIRC. However the default DC-3 can probably be adjusted to give the right performance.
The default aircraft is also a bit of a pig to paint to join up the various sections. You cannot paint anything on the wings because the textures get reversed. It is the same problem with the tail, if you paint a number on it it will be reversed on the other side.
If you need any help let me know.

Painting aint that hard to get your head around. In fact it is quiet easy to do. Some look crap, others look great. You really need to 'have a go' at it. If you think yours looks ordinary, well dont post it. I challenge all and sundry, but no one will beat 'the great Sir Paulo Van Den Berger'!!!

I downloaded the vxr4d2 textures and decided to repaint it. This is my 4th repaint, the first 2 were quick and clean, easy. The 3rd was clean but required lots of touch up one pixel at a time. The vx4rd2 textures are really poor, about 2% fill and 98 % touch up. If I it did not have the US NAVY and the insignias I probably would have started with the default cargo textures. I still have the wings to clean up. And, yeah, I learned about number reversal. One small consolation, the ATC_ID in the aircraft.cfg file burns onto the tail, so I can get 50746 there. I'm thinking of changing the nose number from 14 to 11. If I get something halfway decent I'll post a screen shot. And thanks for the help offer, Alan, I may take you up on it.

Well, here is my screen shot. I think I like it. The only downside is that the insignias are on both wing, top and bottom. I probably can't do much about that.
