Time now for another dumb question.
My model can find my Left-Handed Digital RPM gauge when it is in the Digital folder of the main Gauge folder.
But, my model cannot find that gauge when I place it directly in the panel folder. Yes, I remembered to modify the line in the panel.cfg file appropriately. Because this is the only ac I have that needs this gauge, it made sense to me to park it in the panel folder.
Big deal? Only for my mind. I have had no trouble with other gauges I have parked directly in the panel folder. I thought I understood this little piece of FS9, but clearly I do not. I have double checked my spellings and path names, etc. Any ideas of what the heck is going on?
Also, how do I trade by Type A personality for something less annoying, like Type Z?

Leave it in the Digital Folder. It takes up no more memory there than when placed in the panel folder.
Stick with what works.
Someone once asked if a gauge rsponds faster if placed directly in the panel folder. One guy used to put all his gauges in his panel folders thinking it made his sim faster. That is not true because of the way FS works.
When you select an aircraft, the sim looks at the gauges listed in the panel.cfg file and places all those gauges in a temporary file to be used during flight. Any XML gauges are compiled at that time so they run just as fast as the .gau gauges. Therefore all you might save is the microsec or two that it takes the sim to get the gauges while loading the aircraft. This also shows why XML gauges work as fast as .gau gauges.
