Some shots from the DCA World Rally. Now serious pilots would hone their navigational and flight procedural skills in advance of a competition. Personally, I go out and find out what pretty colours folk have splashed round aircraft with ever more tenuous links to the locale being passed through... For the first leg I picked out one of Markus Hellwig's Canadian bush schemes. So here we go tucking up the wheels as we set off on the first of ten legs. For the second leg I thought it about time to dig out the company bus by Francisca Roele. Leg 3 and a chance to experience some gallic charm. Leg 4 and a smile on your way to work has to help the day along. Leg 5 was around Remembrance/Memorial Day and the RAF have carried out relief flights to this area down the years, so that was all the excuse I needed for this choice. On leg 6 I discovered that it is not advisable to cut the mixtures instead of turning on the carb heat... Leg 7 was overcast, bringing its own challenges. This bird was owned by Phillipines Air before going to Cathay Pacific who were not averse to taking trade in this region too. On leg 8 we cruised in over Heathrow, not sure we would have been too popular by the time the last stragglers rumbled by. This scheme was done by Jaap de Baare from a couple of pictures of the plane when my parents flew on it. Leg 9 had me wandering round Alaska more than most due to a defunct mag variation on the compass! Finally we had a chilly flight from Argentina, so it was about time to deck the MAAM bird in the Rally colours in honour of Norm and his valiant struggle against the spam lowlifes. As enjoyable a series of flights as ever. I hope Norm gets some peace ( piece ) to just struggle with the competitors next year. Some folk can't even spell - never mind navigate themselves round the world.......
