Ouch, well I'm still getting my head round FSX. So maybe by the time XII comes along I will have got the hang of it and there might be a new sim to use. As a Pentax SLR user I am used to waiting decades for them to catch up with the opposition, not to mention getting purchase clearance from management.

I"m looking forward to it. It is going to be far more realistic than the Island Flyover on Wii, that my kids spend SO much time on. I think if you complete some missions or something you can unlock another plane or two, if I recall correctly.
It's not going to replace my FSX, FS9, FS2002, FS2000Pro XPlane 9, or CFS3, but it will make a lovely addition to the group. I can't wait!

My hope is that the sim community just b!tchslaps MS for this one by not buying, but I know some people are so hardcore they'll buy ANYTHING.
Flaminghotsauce, you're just talking about getting the freebie, aren't you?

This is all very sad. Comparing it to the Wii flights around a ficticious island shows how low you have stooped. I will continue flying FS2004 with considerable satisfaction. Nuts to M$.

I don't have much time for long flights anyway, and if Hawaii looks better on Flight than on FSX or FS9, I'll enjoy it. Yes, for free. I have no interest in buying MS airplanes or expanding the island unless it's far more tremendous visually, than what I've seen so far. It looks like the same level up step up as FS9 to FSX.
IF, and it's a huge, large, HUGE-McLARGE if, IF it's a level of magnitude better, I would consider buying more real estate. I doubt it will be.
This new "game" is designed to gather ever more new flyers into the flight simulator community that don't want to own so much as a joystick. From Microsoft's perspective, I can understand the decisions they made to make it more like Wii, all gamey, and mission-y, with objectives to fulfill, as there are plenty of gamers that like that kind of stuff. As an additional bonus for Microsoft, they may sell many, many more copies of FSX after they get some newbies hooked on the idea of flying. They'll get bored with Hawaii and will want to see what else there is in the world. So, from MS' perspective, this may be a very smart move.
For us that use the simulator as realistically as possible, there's not much to add at the current level of computer technology that would be of much use to us without spending another small fortune in computer upgrades. Plus all the cash we'll spend should we pursue Flight further will go right into Microsoft's hopper, which will be a pile of cash that is way more than most of us would ever consider spending at the outset. If they decided to sell the world expansion and extra airplanes, it could cost $400 or more to get it all.
FSX is available for $28.

Well, to be quite frank, sometimes I do get bored. I'll fly the PIC767 inn fs2002, which means getting used to all the automatics. Set it up, then doze off, or read. Kind of like what we used to do in the RW- on the longer flights- you know 727 or the mini-pig. But in the PIC it does take a while to figure it all out- remember what to do and how. Jump into that RFP 742- you'd better know the manual real well or you'll never get the FMS to work. Get real comfortable, then get bored after a month or so, so go to the calclassic DC6B.
Wuupps! That's a different animal. Map settings, prop RPM settings, adjust for BMEP, flap/speed settings. That'll knock the sillines out of you! And you have to remember to fly it- no automatics! Altitude? If you don't get it right, your trip takes a loooong time because you don't get the highest TAS. (Did you say TAS isn't imortant?) Anyway... Found a way to take a break from it all- sometimes play Age of Empires- Conquerors Expansion Pak. Problem is, once you figure out the deal, it's too easy to win. Bored! So, go to Plants vs. Zombies! Play that a few times, then it's back to, well, what? PIC? Dreamfleet 727? DC6B? Sometimes wish I Red Baron 3D. Was that the time of fs2000? Then there is always Variations on a Secks Theme by Lou Ross. But, unfortunately, me wifee doesn't quite go for too much of that stuff. She's more of the simple tune type. OMG, is it perfume from a dress that makes me digress? Anyway, remember- keep the blue side up! lr.

" . . . how low you have stooped . . . "? was in reference to Flaming's note that the Island Flyover in Wii (on the Sports Resort disc) is a low level flight sim. In case you do not know what that Wii game is, it is just a mechanism for viewing the entire island on which the Sport Resort is based, showing the location of the various events. You are given a fancy little aerobatic seaplane to fly, giving fellow competitors a ride. The control mechanism is your Wii controller wand which you tilt or roll to make the plane move. The control is obviously very unrealistic and inverted turns are reversed in direction from what they should be. They also make it very difficult to land because you stall and crash into the water when you try to land on the water.
The basis for the game is to get points for shooting or crashing into balloons and for crashing into little tourist signs placed in awkward locations (like inside volcanoes, etc.).
I like to do it whenever my granddaughter is not around. She makes me look like a doddering old fahrt.

Ahh. How old is she now, by the way? I have five now, from 1-7.
The oldest one has had a little fun w/ flightsim, but she doesn't live very close anymore and it's been a while. She's the one who liked looking into the cockpit and seeing "us" (male/female), inside. She liked the FSX mission where you're an African game warden trying to find the baby elephant with the Trike. (There are other elephants and a few giraffes wandering about, too)

Oh, yeah. Today's the day. I'll probably go d/l it this evening. I might try to play with it if it gets here quick enough over the intertubes. I downloaded Rise of Flight Iron Cross and it took several hours. I'm starting to slide under the weather, and my head is stuffy, eyes dry and itchy. I'm not much in the mood right now to go flyin'.
