Good day Gents & Ladies,
First of all, sorry to all that I flew with on a regular basis, my system has been very temperamental and randomly shutting down without warning on me so I figured instead of wasting numerous hours doing half flights, I would take a break. In the process of figuring out solution to that problem I rectified other problems that have occurred, I’ll explain.
If any of you have watched my YouTube video of me flying my Maam DC3 around Juneau Alaska you will notice a performance hit due to the fact that I have my graphics cranked all of the way up, flying into that area I get about 10-17 FPS, not good, well what I realized while trying to deduce my random shut down issues is my Motherboard has 2 PCIe slots for SLI configuration, each one has a different performance rating. For example, the top slot (primary slot) if used alone is a 16x slot, the bottom slot (secondary slot) if used alone is a 1x slot, if both slots are used together in a SLI configuration (2 separate graphics cards, 1 in each slot bridged with a SLI adapter) they are 8x slots. Now the thing I learned; just because you had a tech build the system doesn’t mean he knows everything, my tech put the Nvidia 7900gt graphics card in the wrong slot, he put it in the bottom slot (1x slot) which seriously hampered the speed that my card handles the graphics, I have since switched it to the top slot, now flying though the same area I get 70 FPS (offline of coarse).
One more thing, since I updated my video driver and updated to SP3 I noticed that I’m experiencing the dreaded “Jaggies”, changing various display settings within FS2004 didn’t bring back my beloved smooth textures nor did changing those settings through the
Windows control panel (as I have done before). After combing the internet for others with the same issue I learned that there is a free software application out there called “Nhancer” that, with one or two clicks of the mouse, will optimize your graphics and forever eliminate the dreaded “jaggies”. One thing to note is that this application is for Nvidia graphics cards, so if you have tried everything to get a smooth appearance with your sim but nothing you do works, try Nhancer.
Still testing the random shut down issue, I put a new higher quality thermal paste between my processor and heatsink, it seems to have brought my temps down but then again they weren’t very high in the first place.
Bottom line? Now my system runs fast and the graphics are smooth…. when it doesn’t shut off …lol
