11:00 on 11/11/18 began the armistice which was hoped to be the end of the War to end all Wars. The fallen from wars past and present are remembered throughout the Commonwealth on this day, as are Veterans in the USA, and next Sunday will mark Volkstrauertag in Germany which commemorates the fallen and those who were the victims of violent oppression by governments. The scale of loss from earlier wars sometimes gets lost these days. This is a picture from the Commonwealth Graves Commission of part of Etaples Cemetery in France which holds over 11,500 graves from the First and Second World Wars. [a href=" [/a] Thomas Binyon's lines which appear on countless memorials were written in 1914, before this and so many other cemeteries were constructed. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
