Victoria (Vancouver Island) - Portland, ORWe continue our scenic flight back to Holland after the delivery of my "GAAR 2009 ride", the A-26C at Victoria.Ready for taxi at Victoria. In the background, our A-26 at the Air Museum. Flaps 20 selected and heading for the runway. Nose gear inspection while lining up... Turning south over Tsawassen with its' Ferry docks. Overhead Boeing Field and the Museum of Flight. We are entering the "Cascade volcano -range", with the first, Mount Baker in the far distance on the left. ...second, Mount Rainier, which towers over the Cascade Range as the most prominent mountain in the contiguous United States and Cascade Volcanic Arc at 14,411 feet (4,392 m). ...third, crater just visible, Mount St. Helens. St. Helens is most famous for its catastrophic eruption on May 18, 1980, which was the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in the history of the United States. Fifty-seven people were killed; 250 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles (24 km) of railways, and 185 miles (298 km) of highway were destroyed. ..and last, Mt. Hood, some 50 miles of Portland, here seen while descending into the airport. It is the highest mountain in Oregon and the fourth-highest in the Cascade Range. Mount Hood is considered the Oregon volcano most likely to erupt... The landing at Portland in a shower... ...and subsequent taxi to the stand. to be contnd..

Next leg: Portland – San Juan CA. Our MD-11F is being prepared for the next leg southbound. Taxi out. Awaiting our turn for take-off… Here a Southwest is coming in. In the left climb over Portland. And there’s another vulcano: Mount Jefferson. Jefferson is in a rugged wilderness and is thus one of the hardest volcanoes to reach in the Cascades though USFS road 1044 does come within 4 miles (6.4 km) of the summit. Nearing Crater Lake in Southern Oregon. It is the main feature of Crater Lake National Park and famous for its deep blue color and water clarity. The lake partly fills a nearly 1,958 foot (597 m) deep caldera that was formed around 7,700 (± 150) BC by the collapse of the volcano Mount Mazama. Several minutes later we’re over Klamath Lake. The largest freshwater body in Oregon, it is approximately 20 mi (32 km) long and 8 mi (12.9 km) wide and extends northwest from the city of Klamath Falls. ..and the last but not least of the series of distinctive landmarks: Mount Shasta. It is the second-highest peak in the Cascade Range, the fifth highest peak in California and a member in the Cascade Volcanic Arc. Approaching San Jose (KSJC) in the haze coming in from the SFO Bay area. Over the fence… ..and on our way to the Cargo ramp,.. ..where we find that we’re not the only freighter at SJC! will be continued!!
