Leg: Kansas City (KMCI) - Chicago/Midway! (KMDW)“After you..” “No after you.” No…after you!”. (we Dutch are sooooo polite!!) That’s why they invented Ground controllers. Crossing the Mississippi river near Davenport. Approaching Chicago suburbs. Speedbrakes out to expedite descend. And there’s our destination! Midway’s runways are not too long (max. 6500 ft.) so autobrake MAX is selected and we traveled ultra light… After the 180-turn over Lake Superior, we face Downtown. As seen from the roof of the parking garage at KEDW. Touch down! Midway is situated right in the middle of town. FULL REVERSE!! is next. A MD-11 is about the biggest they ever had here! We are asked to follow the follow-me. Crossing a busy street full of 737’s! Note the scenic location of the airport with Chicago’s skyline in the distance. I wonder what the neighbourhood think of its' close locaction….. Marshaller in sight! Easy does it… Now to get our loadsheet… hopefully we can still get out of here!!

Chicago/Midway (KMDW) to Toronto (CYYZ) Early evening, we just were push backed and starting engines. Due to the short runway length, we are lightly fueled with 15 tons. (kg) The short taxi ride to Midway’s runway 31Center. …and ready for departure 31C... “Landing lights on…. Set take off power !”… Leaving Chicago Midway… I’ll be back for sure with some lighter stuff… Approaching Lake Huron. Sun is setting and so are we. Canadian clouds are building up around us... ..while we dive into the layers. Turning in for the final approach and reducing to 220 kts. Localizer should become active any moment now… Over the threshold. It looks like it’s rush hour!! Following the marshallers’ instructions to our stand on the Cargo ramp. Taxi lights were be switched off just after this shot was taken to avoid blinding the poor man! Unloading cargo and loading fuel. Next: JFK .
