G'day everyone,
Just a quick note to let you know the Great Australian Air Rally 2010 is on it's way. Much thought and initial planning has been happening quietly in the background over the last few months. Another GAAR befitting the success and reputation of previous events is planned.
I am currently in France having toured the Normandy D-Day landing and battle sites, and currently touring the Somme battlefields. I move into the Belgium Western Front battlefields in the next days before returning back home to Sydney, Australia in late October. The intent is to have the GAAR 2010 web site open on 01 Dec 09.
I look forward to seeing you all again in Feb 10 for the GAAR 2010.

Good to hear, Andrew. I've got two planes with round engines this time, ready to go.

I hope the weather is a bit less breezy than it is up here, a tour of the Somme is probably excellent training for running the GAAR. Have a great time for the balance of your trip.

Looking forward to it. Can't figure which favorite to pull out of the hanger. Old bony wing (Corsair F4U), the C46, a DC3(every body's fav) or try something new. A busy year made it impossible to fly all the way home this year like I have in the past so a new rally will be a plus. Any idea if a four engine monster will be able to do the rally, got my eyes on the Lancaster (personal favorite)

Andrew there is coffee to die for in De Panne after you have done the Belgian battlefields. The name excapes me but it is a pastry shop on the north side of the main drag. Enjoy the trip mate, Seeya, Ed

George, If you leave out the whizzbangs (we'll concede defeat to Ed and his exploding Skippy - nothing could be as deadly) then four Merlins and that wing area will run rings round the Daks. I used a Lancastrian a GAAR or three back, and it was a treat to fly. Might just dust off my Plane Design Lanc too, now that you mention it. Ed, How do you manage to NOT miss a ripe Roo in the road? ? What your Grandson will make of you bumping off Skippy doesn't bear thinking about either.

You could replace the B1 special upkeep bomb with a rotary barbie for the end of flight beanfeast.
I'm currently playing with setting up a Shackleton with a FS98 panel (clearer than the "photo" one supplied by the developer) and Lancaster sounds - seeing as I can't lay my hand on multi Griffons.

Gosh - that time of year already? Many thanks, Andrew.
I'm sure you are finding your Western Front tour interesting - I had the honour of doing it in 1978 with 3 WWI Tommies, including 2 tankies and several professional military historians. Don't miss out on the daily Last Post played by the Ypres fire brigade at the Menin Gate, and while you're there take an evening stroll out to Hellfire Corner - very moving. On the subject of large Avros for the GAAR, surely the perfect answer is a York - 4 Merlins, flies more-or-less in ground effect, and has lots of room for partying! Ah well, time to write the annual appeal to Santa for an FS9 DH(A)Drover...

Actually I've been thinking with all of us loving the old birds it would be different to dedicate the GAAR 2010 to the flyers of WWII. We all fly a bird that appeared in the conflict. Any thoughts Andrew. I know it makes no changes for me I am trying to ready the Lancaster for the Aussie run but I like my Corsair (It would be the third run with it), dilema's nothing but dilema's. Andrew need any help?

G'day again everyone,
Well I'm finally back home after 5 long weeks - 4 on the road and the last relaxing whilst barging down the canals and rivers of France. Ate like a King, drank like a fish and lost 8 kgs off the spare tyre - certainly beats dieting.
Ed, Didn't find your patisserie but found many others that were the near death of me.
JohnL, Spent a few days based out of Ieper (Ypres) visiting Polygon Wood, Passendale (Passchendaele) and Tyne Cot. Did the Last Post each night and certainly something that should never be missed.
George, I have been working the idea of categories for this next event, but considering the strong personal preferences for aircraft type, I am reluctant to restrict it completely to any period or category. More to follow on categories as December roles around. As for the "Lanc", it could be worth real consideration. I flew the Handley-Page "Halifax" in the GAAR 2007 in the Torres Strait islands and was able to get it in and out of Murray Island on a runway of 1722 ft. Mind you, I had to keep fuel and weight down to a bare minimum.
