Hi, i've done some research but i am still not sure: Would the Howard 500 be allowed to fly the GAAR 2010?...i am asking this because the production of this plane started in 1958 but it's first flight was in May 1960...and i havent been able to find out if this plane is a variant of the Howard 350...So could someone competent tell me if this plane is eligible by the rules of GAAR 2010...it seems to be a borderline case thx!

I'll take a stab at it. You have it right according to JANE'S ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AVIATI0ON, "The Howard 500 was produced as a new aircraft , although retaining the the general lines and power plant of the Model 350." The Model 350 was a conversion or remanufactured example of the Lockheed PV-1 Ventura for sale as an executive transport.
I'd say it's a derivative., The first production madel of the 500 flew in March 1960 as you said. But if a 172 or 182 manufactured in the 2000's can be called a derivative of the 172's or 182's that flew in the 1950's, this Howard should also qualify. It even has two nice big radials.

I may get one myself. Milton Shupe and his team does good work.

I would agree with Tom. Wikipedia says:
17 Howard 500s were produced initially, with a further eight being converted from earlier PV-2s to virtually the same standard.
No doubt you have one of the PV-2 conversions. By the way, I've always wondered what a Howard was. Now I know.

In short, the Howard 500 is eligible. My data sources indicate it first flew in Sep 59 so that by-passes the discussion on whether it is a new aircraft or a modified Lockheed Lodestar / Ventura. It was certification that delayed production.
