When I was a kid, flew many times over the Painted Desert- sometimes in a DC6 other times a DC7. Can't find it in FS9. Haven't found an add-on either. lr.

I found it. But I have at least a couple of caveats. First, I have nevr seen the one in the Real World. But I have seen pictures. Second, FS has colros ranging from drab to drab so nothing is likely to jump out at you.
I looked on the Las Vegas and Phoenix Sectionals and found exactly where it should be. they actually name it. If you fly from Winslow to Tuba City, Arizona, you are flying along the middle of it.
Then I went to Winslow in FS2002 as that is what I fly now most of the time. I put a King Air B200 at Winslow and set a flight plan for Tuba City. That put a line down the middle of the Painted Desert on my GPS. The area around Winslow stood out as dark pink. After takeoff I looked west toward Flagstaff and the color of the terrain changed to a dark brown. I flew that way a while and saw the drab dark brown I have seen in many parts of Arizona on the sim. (In the Real World I am only familiar with the southern part of Arizona from Phoenix to Yuma, having flown that many times.) Turing from facing west near Flagstaff to faciing north east I could see a big difference between the dark brown terrain and the pinkish terrain over in the area that was named "Painted desert" on the Sectional chart. i fle w back to the flight path between Winslow and tuba City and then commenced to Tuba City. There was nothing remarkable except for the dark pink color. I was flying at 10,000 ft. The terrain is 7000 ft to 8000 ft.
One thing I get a lot running FS2002 on my laptop with Vista is a message that "Some program is trying to change the Vista Color Scheme. That might indicate that FS displays in non-standard colors that may not show very accurately on any system. For example, I have never seen a bright green as we often see in the Real World.

Some good info there! Question about bluesky: I've picked up 2 ideas about them- 1) the onlt scenery available from them is summer- no winter and 2) it covers the lower layer and no lights show at night. Is this true?
Thanks, lr.

Okay- got my own questions answered by going to the Bluesky FAQ. Tom, I'd be happy to hear your caveats . lr.

It was just that I did not know what to expect. I saw clorful desert sand where the maps say the Painted Desert is but I saw the same sand where I know the desert is just brown. Also there are strange things about FS colors - especially if you use a recent operating system. My Vista keeps saying that FS2002 is doing something naughty.
If you see it, show us a picture.

Okay. I'm going to buy a one-month membership to the bluesky download site- you can use others, but the highest resolution is thier paysite for downloads- otherwise you can only download 2 a day and their are probably hundreds- LAS area has 5, and that doesn't include Boulder Dam area! One month rights is only 10 dollars. I use Windows XP Pro. Have noticed no probs with it and it is very stable for me. MS finally gave up on VISTA, but never got it due to the negative reports. Couldn't find the Painted Desert area at bluesky, but they have a lot of other areas. lr.

I gave this a whirl in both FS9 and FSX. FS9 has the pinkish sand that Tom describes, but FSX is all tan/brown.

I'll check it again, just don't remember noticing it in FS9, and don't remember specifically the colors when I was flying over it in the prop jobs- I do remember it was impressive tho. However, I do remember many specifics about the DC7- especially at night looking out the window exactly across from the engine and watching the blue exhaust flame. When I sat just even with the prop spinner on the DC6 I used to spend a lot of time wondering how it could spin for that long and not get wound up tight and sieze. In the meantime I've been loading up on bluesky. But the really hi-res stuff can only be downloaded 2 times/day. lr.
