I am having fun with crosswinds. But, I can only set wind speeds in multiples of eight KTS (8, 16, 24). Seems to me I set a wind speed of 10 KTS sometime last summer, but I have no idea how. Maybe just a dream? The wind-speed slider (now) won't recognize anything not a multile of eight. Any help appreciated.

FS9? Haven't heard that one. But if you can't find a solution, here's an idea. Google something like "world's worst weather" and find that web-site. Look up the strongest winds, go to the field and download the RW wx, then do your flying at a x-wind runway. Could work. lr.

In FS9 go to Weather and then User defined and then Advanced Weather. You can set clouds, visibility, precip and wind for various levels. You will get any speed and direction you want. Don't bother doing anything except "Global" weather or else you will have trouble flying out of your zone with an abrupt change in wind. When you get a good wind set up, save the flight with the plane either on the runway or on final approach. You'll get the same weather.
Another thing I like to do is to download Real Weather and then "goto airport" to check the weather at various places around the country until you find the challenge you want. You will quickly find a variety of wind conditions. (Use shift+Z to see the surface wind.) with Real Weather you get complex winds and clouds at various altitudes to explore. It is a lot easier and faster than making your own weather.
If you would like, I can send you some interesting RW files.
I set up a little wind shear today for an approach. It worked fine. I had winds of 4 at the surface from 184, at 2000 ft I had 22 from 224, at 5000 I had 28 from 252 and at 10,000 ft I had 45 from 283. in between the program interpolates to give a smooth, varying profile. No problem.
I don't know where you got multiples of 8 for the speed. i have never seen that.

There I was at 50,000 feet when my hand slipped and I mashed about three keys at once, somewhere in the vicinity of the 'L' key. I start to suspect this may have customized my fs9 installation. The machine made a cartoonish series of beeps, sort of like R2D2, and I've had little quirks since. For example, sometimes the sim starts up in PAUSE mode, and sometimes not. I do not see any pattern to it (although there must be one, however elaborate.) Perhaps this also lobotomized the wind-speed slider. I just verified I cannot get it to stick at anything other than multiples of eight. I gather some people do an annual reinstall. If things get worse, maybe I will do that. Rather spend the time 'flying' but.....

In another section I asked people to talk about their OS and how well it runs FS2004 (FS9). Your operating system may be responsible for some instability in the operation of FS9 - especially if it is VISTA.
Also, if you have certain addons, FS9 can go unstable. For example FSUIPC is one that has caused problems with some people in the past and - I suspect more frequently than people determine.
If you decide to scrub your system and reboot (it seems like a good idea), rebuild your FS software in careful steps.
If you really were at 50,000 ft when you had a mishap, something was not right. Few of the aircraft can fly that high.
What were you flying?
While flying there should be nothing bad that can happen by tapping a few extra keys. I do it frequently. it is nothing that cannot be easily reversed.
