VISTA and ZIP files - Problem?
« on: Jul 23rd, 2008, 6:39pm » Quote Modify Remove
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We have experienced some problems with people who have new PC's with VISTA being unable to unzip my zip files. I heard from an independent source this is a basic problem.
Have you experienced it?
Does anyone know of a solution?

I'm in the process of porting all of my stuff to a new computer. It came with Vista and I spent several days contemplating whether I should get XP instead. I checked that my peripherals had available Vista drivers and decided to go for it. Since I prefer performance over pretty desktop and 3D folders I've chosen "classic view" with less frills. Vista works well but I have to confirm my intention to run an EXE every time I install any application. It may seem a bit annoying but the idea is to arrest rogue software in executing all by itself.
The application data path has changed. This may pose some challenges in porting my existing FS9. I installed a basic version to get the registry settings, renamed the installed version from FS2004 to FS2004_bak and I'm currently moving my old one over through a USB 2 connection. I've got 2 hours to go.
Anyway, the issue was Vista and zips. I just tried to unzip a file from Tom's site, using the Vista unzipper. It worked flawlessly. I would suspect a corrupt zip if it doesn't work. In any event, WinRar or WinAce will be nice to have -- they handle zips as well as the other archives (WinRar handles zip and rar and WinAce handles them all)

This question was promprted when Flaming was unable to unzip one of my zips with his new system that runs on Vista.
What exactly do you mean by this:
"Vista works well but I have to confirm my intention to run an EXE every time I install any application. It may seem a bit annoying but the idea is to arrest rogue software in executing all by itself."
Are there still zips that execute when unzipped? I thought most people stopped using those.
I am very glad to hear that you can unzip zips with your Vista.

What I meant is that many operations must be confirmed. I get "If you started this process click OK" whenever I install an application and sometimes when I launch an operation, rename, move or delete a file. We're used to confirming delete operations and that's pretty much it. Even the installation of FS2004 prompted a warning since this FS version is unknown to Vista. You get something like "If you trust this program proceed to install" or something along those lines.
All of my old programs ( pre 2008 ) will cause a warning when I install them but once I OK the installation they work as intended. Even new versions of third-party programs will cause a red flag. Still, as long as you run the computer as administrator you will overule the warnings as you please. However, if you have logged in with a different user profile you won't be able to install or modify much. Secondary users can browse the web, read their email (not mine) and add stuff to their document folder (not mine). I don't have any other profiles installed, hence it's only me and I'm in command.
It may be possible to create code that would self-execute once you unzip it. If so it would take another confirmation before it would be allowed to run.
It would seem that viruses and trojans will have a hard time proliferating on a Vista OS unless they find some way to trick you into confirming and approving of their actions.
You may send me the zip that Flaming couldn't extract and I'll check it out.

Tom, I got your zips and here's the deal: They end up being tagged as "compatibility files" and you must prompt to view compatibility files to make them show.
I use the latest (and last) version of Eudora mail client. I like Eudora since it puts attachments in a "real" folder rather than the cryptically named attachment folders of Outlook. Moreover, the attachment will stay in the attachment folder even if you delete the email that brought it there. I have put a shortcut to my Eudora attachment folder on the desktop and may view all of my received attachments sorted by date or type. Date makes the most sense since it leaves the latest ones at the bottom.
Well, your latest attachments were nowhere to be found even though the email bodies contained the attachment icon complete with their full names. I searched drive C and found nothing until I included hidden files in the search. Then I noticed the "Compatibility files" button on top of my attachment folder and clicked it. Once I got to the files they extracted as any other zip.
I don't know how you access "compatibility files" in Outlook since you can't browse attachments like I do in Eudora. In any event, the trick is to make the OS show what it decides to hide as "compatibility files" until you prompt to see them.
