I have been using Norton for two years now and although it's a good program, they have gotten rediculous in their pricing. My current subscription expires in Feb and they want 69.99 to renew it. I am thinking about going with Webroot for 29.99. Anyone have any experience with it, please let me know. Thanks, Bill.

For starters, Norton AV uses an excessive amount of RAM, at least versions in like 2005 or there abouts did. It is popular because they do a lot of advertising- marketing works. If you want to pay, the top AV program, at least a few years ago was Kapersky (I think the spelling is correct). It was rated the the most complete and the quickest to update- but maybe it was expensive. It also used very little computer resourses. Everytime I installed Norton, sooner or later I had to re-install the system due to a virus. However, I've been using AVAST since the mid 2000's. Never had a problem with it, never picked up a virus or malware with AVAST. (I also do an extreme amount of internet surfing). It is very highly rated. It is unbelievable the number of companies that use AVAST. Oh, by the way- it is absolutely free! lr.

I dropped Norton years ago when it kept screwing up some of my critical work programs. I switched over to McAfee and haven't had any issues since then. I also use spybot as a backup cleaner. I know AVG has a good freeware virus protection. McAfee can be just as costly, I spend $65.00 a year to cover both my comuter and my wife's computer. We also use McAfee at work.

We have used Kaspersky and Microsoft Security Essentials (together with Malwarebyte) on separate machines. I have heard that Kaspersky can be a bit over-enthusiastic with false positives on Windows 7. It can be cheaper via their own ebay store than from other sources, particularly if you want multiple licences.
The MSE/Malwarebyte route is cheaper yet, and seems reasonably effective, if you pay the one-off fee that gives realtime cover for Malwarebyte alongside the free MSE.

Ed with the cost of everything going up daily you just can't beat FRREEE. Free is definitely good.
