...today. Here at KIRK we had winds from 300 degrees at 25, gusts to 41. Woohoo! I had to make a couple circuits in the 172 just to see if the landing was a fluke. I nailed the first one, the second was okay, and the third was okay. I didn't get better with subsequent attempts. I didn't have a lot of wind work in the fling, so today seemed like a good excersize. AS far as the actual work of the sim, it seemed odd that I couldn't straighten the flight path with the rudder and hold the drift with the dropped wing. The gusts were pretty much obliterating my efforts. It worked better to fly it down close crabbed then quickly kick the crab out as I put it down on the runway. It's harder to do than in real life, in my opinion.
I also downloaded an L40 Meta Sokal, a low wing single from Czeckoslovakia. It has a tailwheel landing gear setup only the tail wheel is not in the back. It looks more like a reverse tricycle gear setup. The wheel is just behind the wing. Very awkward in the gusty wind. I managed to put it down, but I ended up dragging one wing and rolling off the left side of the runway facing the 300 degree wind direction. Ouch. I may have taken out a runway light.
