Hi Ed and all, I have been flying the old Radio range routes and I have been thinking about a cross country tour. I checked out the Cross Canada route and except for a few exceptions, it follows the Green 1 route through Canada. I am going to fly it with my Radio range ( Default) DC-3 in BGA colors. I am using the Golden Wings overlay and am flying in 1941. I will refuel at the major points if at all possible. I am running a lower then default cargo weight. This could almost be a Feature of the month. It looks like it would be fun in any smaller aircraft except jets!

Hi all, I'm flying leg#1 in my Cessna 195, I'm about a half hour out of Calgary. I'll post a screen shot or two on the July screen shot page.

I'm pottering along in the bog standard C182 and like you, Allen, I had some fun in the Rockies. I started holding less than 5000' and picking my way around the lumps. It was a bit hairy as the RW had quite a lot of cloud. Gradually had to climb and ended up around 8+ grand. Good fun.
I'm staying with the schedule and laying over in Brandon.

I'm laying over in Brandon, too, trying to keep the schedule. My RW over the Rockies was completely socked in at 8k', so I switched to Fair Weather, that had enough cloud to keep me busy.

I have given John Lovelace a heads up that he has some simmers along for the ride. In fact if we could actually find out WHO is simming along there may very well be more virtuals than actuals. Interesting.

Hi Guys, I just completed the first leg in my Radio Range DC-3 in BGA colors. I flew at 9000 ft. so I only had a few close ones. After landing at Calgary, I switched to my BGA Cessna T-50 Bobcat. While I was flying the first leg I also modified the Cessna panel for the radio range and can use it now. I have started the second leg and am on the in bound beam to Swift Current, AB. The Bobcat is a better aircraft to fly on this. It is cruising about 115 kts. IAS. Chasing the radio beams is a challenge but I am learning. I am looking forward to the beer tent at Brandon! ;D

Allen, viewing your screenie I see you flew across Lac Superior. I chickened out and went via Wawa. A couple of miles extra but more to see. I will admit that I tired of the Cb activity and poor viz and swapped to the good ol' "Fair weather" at 1/3rd distance.
Googling The event produces some interesting snippets.

Well Ed, I have to admit that I cluck-clucked a little too. The flight started out OK at 3500' but by the time I got to Michipicoten Island I was down to 3000' just under the cloud base. I was getting big flashes on lightning (I was too slow on the Print Screen key to capture anything), thunder claps and rain. I tried picking my way around the big clouds, but soon everything just closed in. That's when I selected Fair Weather - a rank privilage of simming . Of course, then I felt bad for not sticking it out and after a while I went back to RW. By then I was through the thunder storms and flew the rest of the way on RW. That's when I took the screenie. By the way, on the web site they ask for pictures, so just for the heck of it I sent three of my screenies. I got an answer back, "Very Cool". Not sure what that means yet. Allen

I think I am behind you guys (too much beer? ;D). I just landed at Marathon. I had to fly low because of clouds. Not doing bad times. I am doing about what was planed in the itinerary. The Bobcat is doing a good job. I may go back and fly the first leg again with the Bobcat. I am learning the radio range techniques and it is getting easier. I am also reading a book called "North Star Over My Shoulder". It is by Bob Buck and about his flying in the 30's and later. He talks about flying the radio ranges in a DC-2 or DC-3. It is a good book and worth reading if you can find it. My daughter found it on a book swap site.

just starting out - flew leg 1 in dc-3 at 11,000 using radio range. 3:15 enroute. encountered broken clouds most of the way, light rain 10 nm w of Cranbrook BC. waited too long to stsrt descent final was exciting! ever try forward slipping a dc-3 at 140 kts.
hope to continue on this week-end. all in all sounds like a fun trip. glad to be along for the ride

I did two legs yesterday. CYSP to CYAM and CYAM to CNC3. Using radio range caused little more flight time in one of the legs. I am going to start CNC3 to CYFC today and that will put me close to their schedule. Due to real life conflicts, I my not get to finish today but that is what pause and save flight is for! I was having a problem with the Cessna because all the speeds for it are in MPH, not knots. I have that problem solved now but need to find an rpm and manifold pressure gage more in the range its operation. The DC-3 is a little too much but works. Ahh , the fun and problems we have!

made it to Brandon today with fuel stop in regina. will make marathon sunday after fuel stop in thinder bay. changed descent rate in fs nav from 900 fpm to 500 fpm. also descending at ias of 130 carrying 20" mp and 2050 rpm's. seems to control descent a whole lot beter. 90 kts with 1/2 flaps on final gives better control and allowed a greaser onto the runway. please hold the applause.
this is fun. thanx to whoever found the site
