Salute Andrew, first - happy 2013 and best wishes. Once more, I would like to say thank you for your effort - to afford pleasure.. and last but not least: to keep up our theoretical framework! Long time ago, since I was in control as PIC. Well then - go ahead! But now, the questions are on standby: I use the (no advertising) - scenery and I find out this at YQNS.. How about to land here - with success after flight and a good time? Construction operative is the answer to this problem - just call.. and in no time: No more trees in the middle of the runway - clear of obstacles.. and .. a little hangar to store your plane - there is even a truck - maybe accompanied by your friends for a after-work beer? Well, after construction work, the complete history and scenery looks different. Eh, cheers to all GAAR 2013 pilots!!

Andrew: I just noticed that the P38J I'm flying down can be equipped with superchargers. Is this going to be a qualifying problem? If so I have a back up plan.

As long as you've got pistons flapping about somewhere, don't sweat the odd whistling noise - otherwise no DC-3s or Merlin/Griffon powered entries would be permissible to name but a few. And yes the pistons do effectively flap around when the rotary cylinders rotate, this for any potential DH2 or Camel drivers. Now there's a thought. I thought that the only P-38s to not be fitted with superchargers were the few that the British ordered, and then returned because they were disappointed with the performance. Only bureaucrats could be disappointed by such a turn of events.

George,
As Allan has correctly pointed out, supercharged, and even turbocharged engines are permissible. Given that these were added to piston engine aircraft to improve performance, particularly at altitude, the aircraft satisfies the base criteria of having a piston engine.
Cheers Andrew

Is a P51-D Mustang eligible, either in its original form or in the FSX "racing" form? I don't know enough about the engines to know if they are turbocharged.

Yup, a P-51 Mustang would be eligible, however modified, so long as you don't go as far as the Piper PA-48 Enforcer turbo-prop.
The easiest way to check the engine type for any sim aircraft is to have a look at the aircraft.cfg under [GeneralEngineData].
If engine_type=0 then it's a piston engine.
Then you just have to make sure that it is basically the right era, can get in and out of the airfields, and has the range for the longest leg.
Simples, as an annoying ad round here goes.

Anyone wanting a "different" twin with nice handling and great all-round visibility for this year's event is recommended to try the Portsmouth Aviation Aerocar Major - think it's on www.flightsim.com. I flew it in another rally last year and enjoyed it greatly. I was going to enter it for the GAAR, and might still fly it as my "second horse", but have gone for something else (very pretty, and amazingly futuristic-looking). Not only a "new" aircraft, but a new "go-faster" laptop, and I've at last installed VOZ scenery, and Santa has just delivered a Saitek Flight Yoke - this GAAR is going to be the best yet!

Sadly Katie will not be doing any of the flying, unless for some reason I really can't complete a leg in time. She's not a fan of flying powerful warbirds, so I'm on stick for the whole of this one. She thinks I'm going to crash anyway...

Sad is the fact.. Katie will be driving around Austrailia in a hot, dusty truck, full of parts, extra fuel, water, stale sandwiches, and washing the bugs off the bubble canopy ,in stead of flying in the nice Oz air, and sipping a tinney while waiting for the ground grew to arrive...

Simon, I guess we will never know if you crash.....unless you fess up or Katie posts her own update on how the ground crew had to work all night to get the aircraft in flying condition again. ;D Now there is a good idea for a parallel storyline post during the event.....the exploits of the pilot and the toils of the ground crew to keep the "fly-boy" in the air. Cheers Andrew

Now that's a good idea I must be honest if I crash because I believe Katie pulled out a couple of years ago when she wrecked the plane mid way through (Spitfire, IIRC?), so it's only fair for me to fess up if it happens. I've not had much trouble landing the Mustang though, as long as I have a good approach and don't let it go too fast. I have also been ordered that I can't have a tinny while flying
