Greatly looking forward to this GAAR as a nostalgic return to The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race in which I was the Navigator of the winning Yacht "Ripple" in 1993. It will be a far cry from Sextant sights on cloudy days to simply tuning in to the VOR & NDB for Positions, as we now do. There will be many a Headland & Inlet that we will fly over that I missed from 30 to 50 miles offshore during my 5 Day Epic. See you all at Constitution Dock in Hobart. L.

LEG 6: For those of you who may be using FTX Australia Scenery in FSX you will find landing at Queenstown YQNS Runway 9/27 covered in trees and impossible to land on without a crash. SOLUTION: Go to Options/Settings/Display/Scenery and move the Autogen Density Slide to NONE. That will clear all the trees for miles around. Been there and found out the hard way.

Quite a lot of people on the roster now. I'm still the only pilot in a Mustang - beginning to think everyone in the DC-3s and Grumman Geese knows something I don't...

simon , Mustang will work ok . Just be ready to stand on the breaks ,getting stopped on the gravel strips and make sure you have enough speed before you lift off , the Horse has been known to roll over on the rider.. the Fabric an tube Kites I am flying are really affected by winds aloft , past events I have always flown at least 1 warbird ..usually carrier based ,strong gear ,short field ability..

I'm having trouble accessing flight situation files. Any advice gratefully accepted. What do you mean by accessing them? Is it a download issue or loading them from FS9 / FSX? Are you sure you are placing them into the relevant 'Flight Simulator Files' folder in 'My Document'? Cheers Andrew

Simon, People fly aircraft based on pure personal preference, provided they think they can get it in and out of some of the smaller strips (note the DC-6 and L-049 'Constellation'). Dave Evans comments are also very true. There are some entries that will appear on the Roster in the next update and these include many Australian WWII fighter / trainer designs. The DC-3 is popular because a lot of participants are from the VA DC-3 Airways, where the aircraft is one of only three flown. I would say the G-21 'Goose' is popular because it is a default FSX aircraft. The statistics are always interesting and I produce a statistics page once the GAAR 'officially' starts. Cheers Andrew

Hey all, While we wait for GAAR 2013 to officially start, I decided to find some scenery so the scenery isn't "too boring." Some of our stops were included; others were not. Here are a couple of links to airport sceneries I found: www.flightsim.com/vbfs/fslib.php?searchid=5730550www.flightsim.com/vbfs/fslib.php?searchid=5731074Those not found I created myself using RWY12. They're not perfect, but still a slight improvement. They are attached to this message. Note: the links and the attachment are for FS9, as it is the only sim I currently own and use. If you use FSX or some other sim, sorry lads; you're on your own. Cheers! CP Attachments:

Just made registration on time. It took a bit of negotiating, but the RAF has come up trumps again and found me a Pembroke. Seems it was sitting in some farmer's field somewhere in Oz, which at least meant I didn't have to ferry it down. I've only done a few hours in it, including the test flight, and it's time sitting in the field shows. However, we'll see how we manage.

To reply to Adrew GAAR #1 files are in My Docs, FSX files, don't show up in sim. woods Woods, This is very puzzling as there have been no other reports of this nature. I know you are using FSX, but are you using XP, Vista, Win 7 or Win 8 as your OS. There are a total of 30 files in the FSX Flight Situation Files zip download and all these files must be in the 'Flight Simulator X Files' folder in your 'My Documents' folder. Follow the steps below and hopefully this will get you there: - Unzip the FSX Flight Situation Files download file to a temporary folder.
- Cut and paste the 30 Flight Situation files to the 'Flight Simulator X Files' folder in your 'My Documents' folder.
- From the 'Free Flight' screen in FSX, click on 'Load' and scroll down to and select the relevant GAAR Flight Leg file and click 'Fly Now'.
- This should load the Flight Situation file for the selected Flight Leg and have you positioned on the departing runway in the default Cessna.
- Then simply change to the aircraft you have entered in the GAAR, fly the Leg and record your flight time.
If it still isn't working, take a screen capture of the 'My Documents\Flight Simulator X Files' folder and the 'Load Flight' pop-up screen in FSX and email it to me at the gaardirector email address and I will see if I can see anything that's obviously missing. I hope this helps. Let me know how you go and I am happy to try and help you out some more. Cheers Andrew

As far as getting in and out of some of the interesting areas Andrew finds for us I was able last year with a bit of practice to drop my Lancaster MKIII in and out of the touch and goes. I did prune a few trees but made it without crashing. This year it is a P38J, seems I just can't be normal and do it simple. Have fun all. Posted my trial time last night so hope I got in under the wire as well especially considering I've flown all the way down from the frozen tundra called Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Even brought a polar bear along this year for companionship.
