leg 08 Hey Urs! Thanks for your kind treatment, the pic and the warning of unexpected long range missiles ;D and: your "grasshopper" has a huge advantage: when it comes to fuel, don't ask me how much I have to pay for my bird,...thats why you are ahead of me,.....filling the tanks makes me wait "a little" think I take the opportunity to get low budget price from the Tasmanian Aero Club,....thanks folks, hope to meet you some day in reality! okay then, ....filled up with 2 times 40% means I run out of cash anyway, but we are able to start up the engines and taxi to the runway in use oh look there, just another GAAR participant taxiing in front of me its a C 152, could be Allen Peterson? ?? hey, Good Luck and Happy Landing Allen so it's our turn.....see you guys....thanks for the great meeting at this awesome place! "I'll be back" ( another Austrian would say....guess who! ) power set full throttle to "catch" Urs just passed George Town on the right wing, another small nice airfield, and reaching waypoint 1, Port Dalrymple, turning west.......The coast in the Burnie district is a glorious expanse of ocean and sky, with a multitude of capes, bluffs and headlands linked by stretches of sparkling white beach. Behind the coast there are forests, farms, lakes, rivers, and rolling hills planted with all kinds of crops. There are numerous small villages, easily reached on the network of country roads. you know, I never can resist to make my own "sight seeing tour": after Devonport Bay and inbound Wynyard I have to see the pittoresque Park Grove Bay at Burnie with its crusade ships and the waving crowd of people to greet the low passing boxcar ;D passing Blackman Reef at Burnie, A shallow reef extending about 300 Metres from shore at the eastern end of West Beach Reserve. Good for invertebratre life constant listening to Smithton 119,1 but no one there?!?! Urs did I pass you on the trip? Or did you "meet" one of these fast lightning missiles from outer space??? we'll see,.... first let's concentrate on my target time, this time I will improve! yeah!!!!! 0,01 difference that's unbeatable..... so this time no beer.....lets open a bottle of Champain from fridgy....come on guys let's have some fun before we leave this wonderful island ;D

Departing YQNS Queenstown. There are a lot of lakes up in these mountains. Great Lake. No wonder Launceston was the first city to use hydroelectric power in Australia. Turning left to make a right downwind for RW14R Final Touch down at YMLT Launceston. Oops a little bit left of centerline.

Hi Jaz Well, it must have been another guy. If I had seen that big bird behind me I would've pulled over and let it pass. Here is my 152 at the gas pump in Launceston, I just arrived. One thing about a 152, it takes less gas but it takes a looong time to get there. Allen Uploaded with ImageShack.usApproaching Cambridge after a two hour flight. Oops that's not runway 14, where's 14? No lights, ah! head for the fireworks (thanks, John!). Uploaded with ImageShack.usAha, that must be it, or is it a fireworks flare. That's gotta be it, under the right wing, to the right of the fireworks column. Blast! I'm too high, chop the power, pull up the nose, cut the speed, full flaps, get her down (you can do that in a 152). If you have trouble seeing 14 welcome to the club. Try turning off all of the room lights. Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Leg 6 Turning to heading for YQNS at waypoint 2. Halfway to YQNS - about to pass over Gells Lookout, with Wyld's Craig in the distance and the wonderfully named Mount Misery on the far right of the screen.

Leeet's go for Leg#9 - our Director Andrew was so gentle to let us sleep until late! After arriving at the Airport, my first visit was the office of Mr. Weather.. "what about the wind today?" I ask - "eh, you have to expect contrary winds (!) and the choice of 9kts with gusting over 14kts at 2200 feet, above then 18kts at or 26kts" he answered. "What is your decision?" - "Well, I'll take something between number one and number two" I answered. So here I am, ready in good gear - in hope not to meet "the roaring forties".. well, not too much of them! A while later, ready for departure on rwy 28 Gravel. It's 1:45am Zulu-time.. Going up to 2500 feet AMSL, and i'ts more or less a straight line, heading 303°, to King Island. Only a short hop over water, and Hunters Island is showing up. The island is run as a cattle property and there is a private airstrip on the island. "Just in case..!" Leaving all this behind, it's time so say "good bye Tasmania and thank's for your great hospitality!" That was to be expected.. SCT046 and seafog! Not being left alone and thinking too much of Andrew's words, about shipwrecks and loss of lives, I listen to "Melbourne Center on 123.90MHz" - quite busy that guy on the Mainland! 77k's later, without any further occurrences , I'm about to reach the southerly coast of King Island, near the little village of "Grassy".. Leaving Melbourne Center and switching to the local CTAF.. nobody else on the freq. In the right place at the wrong time.. I'm supposed to fly VFR!! In the right place at the right time.. the cloud's have passed. Have a look overhead the field and so, rwy 28 is my target! A a little bit pressed for time, a short approach is the loophole!! My landing - as usual, the left of centerline!! Taxiing to the ramp and judging my output. Aiming-time: 66.38, effective: 67.02, tripfuel calc. 13lt. fuel used: 19lt. not too bad! Did I hear right? Lobster, Beef..? I go for Lobster! (you hear Thom?) But first: "fill her up please"... Cheers from the Island.

leg 09 starting up the two "corn cobs", as the Pratt and Whitney wasps are called......... a little much oil here?!?! still smoking engines but smooth running with full power,...maybe the fuel of the Tasmanian Aero Club was to cheap?!?! ;D heading against Hunter Island, the Tower of Smithton calls and announces the smoky tail behind us.... we decide to stay close to the Tasmanian shore line as long as possible, and not direct way.... the two engines will "clean themselves" after a few minutes.... sh*** happenes.....did I say the two of them? No1 seems to have its own life ,...do I see firetongues coming out of the exhaust pipes? OMG, should this be the end of the Rallye? fire on engine 1!!!, power shut down, fuel shut off, fire exting on....!!!!! good to have another engine, still working here....but we have to decide what to do,....turn?, land at Woolnorth? is this airstrip long enough for a boxcar? my brain is racing, as my heart beats like a machine gun.... mayday or not? emergency list come on,...lets work! we'll not give up easy.... okay the small airstrip is a rescue place anyway, and as long as the right engine runs smoothly we head up there,.... new powersetting and a gleam of hope at the horizon not to have the end of this wonderful rallye in sight, engine one stops.... under better circumstances we would have seen the "wall" of power windmills at the Windfarm of Woolnorth, but we are full concentrated on engine 1,....fire is stopped, feather the props and hope for a sufficient airstrip to stop and see whats the reason.... this airstrip is d**n'd short and with only one remaining powersupply to risky,.....lets think , maybe restart? the rallye must go on!!! we start,.... the engine is milling,....the sound is not to bad,....all controls "green",....some misfiring, some smoke, some black clouds, and then? we are back!!!!!!! Arnie? ! a little nervous in sight of this endless water here and the possibility of being lost in nirwana,....but....keep cool.... just a small island in the background, smaller then Robinson's.... but my bird flies and flies and.... ;D flies....towards the small line of land in front of us.... what a relief to reach King Island as if the land wants to grab us..... hey Urs, you will not believe what I have to tell you....approaching the target of today feels wonderful,....forget about the timing,.... touch down in gratitude and:::: :Da gooooooood time, just a 0.30 ahead,.... ;D this is so crazy and exciting!!! taxi slowly at the edge of the airfield in case of fire....although I am sure, its okay... security stop parking position,....no back firing on shut down, no suspicious sound no smoke, nothing bad,.... anyway, first my bird gets first aid ,....and then the Lobster with Urs gets last aid......

Someone else want my parking at Launceston? Parked. Not pretty, but I followed the marshaller's instructions. Low-level down the Tamar. "Not less than 500' from any person, vehicle, vessel or structure" Remember to have at least half a winspan clearance before banking ninety degrees! Three lighthouses in one shot!! I think I'm getting fixated on lighthouses. Maybe a book "Lighthouses of Australia"

Great Screenies Folks, I know it has already been said and I agree 100%.
Paul VDBerg, re the age of GAAR, the earliest I have flown in is 2002, it was a race then, and that year was organised by Joe Deering and Brian Wilson. Brian was, for quite a while, the chief of the Australian Division.
Until a few years ago the event waa always totally around Australia, a long distance and, as about 90% of my home land is monotonous and dead boring from the air, they were something approaching a marathon. The present events are much more interesting.
Have fun you flyers, Ed
