final leg....
10
kind of strange after all these wonderful and exciting places, all the different people, great BBQs and the thrilling time schedules....and not to forget my technicals....
I could have posted thousands of pics, but lets see the most interesting ones....
starting up at King Island the last outpost before heading home to the mainland after a long night and half a day of maintenance of engine 1 of my bird, fixing the oil leakage
take off as hundred times before....smooth and powerful
turning north,....Bass Starit awaits us
a last small airstrip on New Years Island at the end of King Island north of Christmas Island
monotounous engine sound, Bass Strait
did I say monotounous?
oil pressure on engine 1,...s**t, I cannot believe this, I worked hard all night long,....
its true, nearly without oilpressure on the left engine....
better to shut down instead of the risk of a fire again....
cruising with one Pratt and Whitney without any cargo will not be the problem....
but we have to fight for a good time, so lets try and start up again without to much power first
milling and then restarting and then half power on the left side ;D oil pressure comes back....
heading against Cap Otway, what a relief....
the engines sound better and lets hope for the rest of the race......maybe I have to change the engine or even the oilpipes and oilpumps again afterwards,....
nearly forgot to watch out on this beautiful landscape....Apollo Bay
approaching Torquay, Tiger Moth World
not to busy today....but, we were here....
with regained selfconfidence towards wp 2
entrance of Port Phillip Bay
passing Pt Nepean
and wp 3, Mud Island
wp 4 YMPC Point Cook RAAF Base....today "only" GAAR waipoint"
for touch and go without military stopover....
they hid all the military aircraft from our suspicious eyes....lol....or they are at Laverton the true military base 4 miles north from here
anyway, turn to our last target and gaining altitude
to see Melbourne skyline
the fire work at Moorabbin is unexpected awesome and we head downwind RW 35 in use for the GAAR only,...the main traffic is heading for RW 31 ( as I hear from the tower )
turning pattern in the south....
showes a marvellous sunset on the left wing and ....
...the firework in front of us,....long final for the final target
forgotten are all the technicals and the stressy times...
great....just beeing speechless in approaching the runway
like having birthday....
flare.........and......
touch down......
time isn't really important as we taxi to the GA parking area,....music in the ears.... and happy after all these adventures....our eyes are fixed to this spectacular welcome
parking position ....
I cannot believe all this , and more,...there is another C-119 and some Grummans and Maules....just a party for tonight!!!!!
looking out from my cockpit window....
"Heather was here"
the"other" boxcar.......
we have to meet Urs and the others for tonights party and then I HAVE to see these wonderful birds over there....
thank you Andrew and ALL of you, who made this race possible and in this wonderful quality.....and as my Austrian companian says:
I'LL BE BACK
Cheers to ALL of you!!!!!
Thomas and his Flying Boxcar
